The Last Antagonism.*)
In order to judge intellectual views of life correctly, one must take into account the social movements of which they are the product. Today's philosophical viewpoint differs essentially from that of the previous century. Science has not only made progress; it has passed through philosophical critique and speculation, just as industry has passed through the bourgeois revolution and the rule of capital. — The scene of the struggle, the struggle and the combatants, everything has changed in the course of the social movement that began in the previous century and which we have to continue today. The speculative philosopher of the nineteenth century resembles the revolutionary philosopher of the eighteenth as little as the liberal citizen of today resembles the revolutionary of that time.

# 4. Der letzte Antagonismus.*) Um die geistigen Lebensanschauungen nchtig zu beurtheilen muß man den sozialen Bewegungen Rechnung tragen, deren Produkt sie sind. Der heutige philosophische Gesichtspunkt unterscheidet sich wesentlich von jenem des vongen Jahrhunderts. Die Wissenschaft hat nicht nur Fortschntte gemacht; sie ist durch die philosophische Kntik und Spekulation hindurch gegangen, wie die Industne durch die bürgerliche Revolution und die Kapitalherrschaft. — Der Schauplatz des Kampfes, der Kampf und die Kämpfenden, alles hat sich verändert im Verlaufe der sozialen Bewegung, die im vongen Jahrhundert begonnen hatte, und die wir heute fortzusetzen haben. Der spekulative Philosoph des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts gleicht so wenig dem revolutionären Philosophen des achtzehnten, wie der liberale Bürger von heute dem revolutionären von damals.
