from eternity on Earth; and this Earth itself, our entire planetary system, indeed our astral worlds, however great their extent and duration may be, they once arose from the infinitely dilated space as cosmic germs, as centers of gravity, just as they will one day again be dissolved and volatilized as dead, expired, solidified, petrified celestial bodies in the fiery hearth of new, youthfully reacting world-spheres, which offer us the imposing spectacle of the flaring stars.
As for the eternity of matter or its atoms, it has proven to be an empty fiction. Physics has long since shown this hypothesis of the chemists to be untenable. Along with the so-called imponderables of the mathematicians, they too have had to yield the field to the genetic worldview, which presupposes everywhere only movements, no atoms and no world-ether. If matter were composed of rigid, eternal, unchangeable atoms, which are supposed to be surrounded by an imponderable Aether, — the well-known hypothesis of chemists and mathematicians — then with the infinite dilution of which matter is capable by means of heat and air pump even in our experiments, at least a trace of the presupposed discontinuity of the atoms would have to be detectable, whereas physics proves that the most dilated gases, in every point of the space they occupy, by the same properties from one another

163 Ewigkeit her auf der Erde; und diese Erde selbst, unser ganzes Planetensystem, ja unsre Astralwelten, wie groß auch ihre Ausdehnung und Dauer sein mögen, sie sind ein Mal aus dem unendlich dilatirten Raume als kos- mische Keime, als Schwerpunkte entstanden, wie sie einst als todte, abgestorbene, erstarrte, versteinerte Weltkörper wieder aufgelößt und verflüchtigt werden im Feuerheerde neuer, jugendlich reagirender Weltsphären, welche uns das imposante Schauspiel der auflodemden Steme dar- bieten. Was die Ewigkeit des Stoffes oder seiner Atome betnfft, so hat sie sich als eine leere Fiktion erwiesen. Die Physik hat diese Hypothese der Chemiker längst als eine unhaltbare nachgewiesen. Mit den sogenannten Imponderabilien der Mathematiker haben auch sie der genetischen Weltanschauung, welche überall nur Bewegun- gen, keine Atome und keinen Weltäther voraus setzt, das Feld räumen müssen. Wäre der Stoff aus starren, ewigen, unveränderlichen Atomen zusammengesetzt, welche von einem imponderablen Aether umgeben sein sollen, — die bekannte Hypothese der Chemiker und Mathematiker — so müßte bei der unendlichen Verdünnung, deren der Stoff mittelst Wärme und Luftpumpe schon in unsem Expenmenten fähig ist, wenigstens eine Spur von der vorausgesetzten Discontinuität der Atome nachgewiesen werden können, wogegen die Physik nachweißt, daß die dilatirtesten Gase in jedem Punkte des Raumes, den sie einnehmen, sich durch dieselben Eigenschaften von einan- 11*.
