Luzzato has no idea of the dialectic of world history; he still does not get beyond the banal opposition of intellect and sentiment, and reproaches the flashes of thought of a Spinoza, which are a direct emanation of the creative Spirit, with being heartless, because he confuses them with the “understanding of the intelligent.”
The moral or, more correctly, the holy life originates in Spinoza, as in Moses and the prophets, from one and the same primordial source, from the idea of God as the sole and only Being of all otherwise merely null and transient existence. The religious genius of the Jews did not have divine revelations, inspired by the holy spirit, only in antiquity. The holy spirit always rests on Israel, whenever it is a matter of a new, great world-historical phase of development in the life of humanity, a new social creation, which, like any other in nature and history, can only spring from the primordial source of all life, from the creative Being. The revelations of sacred history, which only come to a conclusion with this history itself, are direct inspirations from God,

161 nen den GegenErfahrungswissenschaften, auf den wir im folgenden Paragraphen näher eingehen werden, in ſeinem Verhältniß zu frühem und gleichzeitigen Gestalten des geschichtlichen Antagonismus kennen, um Spinoza in ſeiner ganzen Tiefe und welthistonschen Bedeutung zu begreifen. — Luzzato hat von der Dialektik der Weltgeschichte keine Ahnung; er kommt noch nicht über den banalen Gegenſaß von Verstand und Gemüth hinaus, und macht den Gedankenblißen eines Spinoza, die ein unmittelbarer Ausfluß des Schöpfenschen Geistes ſind, den Vorwurf der Gemüthloſigkeit, weil er ſie mit dem „Verstande der Verständigen“ verwechſelt. Das fittliche oder nchtiger das heilige Leben entspnngt bei Spinoza, wie bei Moſes und den Propheten aus einer und derſelben Urquelle, aus der Gottesidee als dem einigen und einzigen Weſen alles ſonst nur nichtigen und vergänglichen Daſeins. Das religiöſe Genie der Juden hat nicht nur im Alterthum, vom heiligen Geiste beſeelt, göttliche Offenbarungen gehabt. Der heilige Geist ruht stets auf Israel, ſo oft es ſich im Leben der Menschheit um eine neue große welthistonsche Entwicklungsphaſe, um eine neue, ſoziale Schöpfung handelt, welche wie jede andre in Natur und Geschichte, nur dem Urquell alles Lebens, dem schöpfenschen Weſen entspnngen kann. Die Offenbarungen der heiligen Geschichte, welche erst mit dieſer Geschichte ſelbst zum Abschluß kommen, ſind unmittelbare Eingebungen Gottes, 11
