harmony of the manifold world as that which has fallen away from the Divine, the rejected; and paganism fled into the creative spirit of Judaism, which was transcendent to it. — On the other hand, only those Jews could satisfy the religious needs of the pagans who became alienated from their own world, fell away from Judaism, and immersed themselves in the dying pagan world, in order to rise out of it and with it to the spirit that animated it, i.e., only those Jews who no longer imagined the world as the sacred product of a holy being, but as that which has fallen from God, the sinful. — Thus arose the double apostasy of the worldly from the divine and of the divine from the worldly, a de-worldlified Judaism in a de-divinized paganism, the Christian worldview of the Jewish saint who became a pagan man in order to elevate the peoples to the spirit and to prepare them for a future, better, divine world, which was conceived as an otherworldly one.
This other world, however, in the course of historical development, to the degree that the peoples rose to the Jewish religion of history, became ever more a this-worldly realm. And the more Jewish, i.e., the more humanitarian the pagan world became, the more the Jews could also participate in the culture of this world, which was progressing for the better. 158 Harmonie der mannigfaltigen Welt als das vom Gott- lichen Abgefallene, Verworſene; und das Heidenthum flüchtete ſich in den ihm jenſeitigen schöpfenschen Geist des Judenthums. — Auf der andem Seite konnten nur ſolche Juden das religiöſe Bedürfniß der Heiden befnedigen, die ſich ihrer eignen Welt entfremdeten, vom Judenthume abfielen und ſich in die absterbende heidnische Welt verſenkten, um aus ihr heraus und mit ihr ſich zum Geiste, der ſie beſeelte, zu erheben, d. h. nur ſolche Juden, welche die Welt nicht mehr als das heilige Produkt eines heiligen Weſens, ſondem als das von Gott Abgefallene, Sündhafte ſich vorstellten. — So entstand der doppelte Abfall des Weltlichen vom Göttlichen und des Göttlichen vom Weltlichen, ein entweltlichtes Judenthum in einem entgötterten Heidenthum, die chnstliche Weltanschauung vom jüdischen Heiligen, der ein heidnischer Mensch geworden, um die Völker zum Geiste zu erheben und ſie für eine zukünftige, beſſere, göttliche Welt vorzubereiten, die als eine jenſeitige vorgestellt wurde. Dieſes Jenſeits wurde aber im Verlaufe der geschichtlichen Entwicklung, in dem Maaße, wie ſich die Völker zur jüdischen Geschichtsreligion erhoben, immer mehr ein Dieſſeits. Und je jüdischer, d. h. je humanitärer die heidnische Welt wurde, desto mehr konnten ſich auch die Juden an der Cultur dieſer zum Beſſem fortschreitenden Welt betheiligen. Als endlich nach langen Kämpfen zwischen der in rohe, Sinnlichkeit und
