...people presuppose the unity of God despite the multiplicity of the world, the unity of the human race despite the diversity of human races, because the entire plan of world history had been envisioned by the spirit of the Jewish people from the beginning of its own history.
The entire literature of the Jews can only be understood from this genetic viewpoint of the Jewish people; Judaism is a religion of history, a cult of history, in contrast to the pagan cult of nature.
The revelation of the Jewish spirit, standing completely isolated at the beginning of the history of historical humanity, would be entirely inexplicable and appear supernatural, were there not originally different ethnic groups with peculiar, typical spiritual dispositions, which must from the outset arrive at diverging fundamental views. These same miracles of the spirit confront us in the diverging languages of the primordial peoples: primitive religions and primitive languages are creations of race, as Ernest Renan has correctly noted, although he has no inkling of the significance of the primitive Jewish religion of history. — History thus confirms what we already know from other sources through anthropology, namely, that there are originally different human races and ethnic groups.
