Preface to the First Edition.
What I intend with this publication is less a polemic against Judaism than the establishment of a cultural-historical fact.
Wherever circumstances compel a polemical tone of language, it can and must only be understood as the “cry of pain” of the oppressed.
A resigned “pessimism” flows from my pen.
Think, “there must also be such odd fellows,” and be assured, no one would be more pleased than myself if the facts I have touched upon can be proven ad absurdum.
The Jews and Judaism have already been attacked countless times in literature. But always from the standpoint of our non-Jewish self-conceit; I would say, in a boastful, Gambetta-esque style of retreat.
Our arrogance has not yet brought us to the honest, open admission that Israel has become a world power of the very first rank. We have indeed recognized the Jews, but—not ourselves.
This publication may therefore in any case lay claim to originality. Written free of any and all confessional prejudice, it merely lets you look into the mirror of a cultural-historical fact, and it is not the fault of the “pessimist” if the mirror shows you — slaves.
I wish two things for this publication:
-
That it not be met with silence by Jewish criticism,
-
that it not be dismissed with the all-too-familiar, smug platitudes.
I am, after all, proclaiming loudly, and without any ironic intent, the world-historical triumph of Judaism, the bulletin of a lost battle, the victory of the enemy without any embellishment of the defeated army.
And I should think such openness has a right to expect something other than zealous journalistic seesawing.
