for development today proceeds more rapidly than in earlier centuries.
What Russia has to expect from Jewry is clear. With the exception of two or three Jewish newspapers which observed a platonic neutrality, the entire Jewish daily press in the Russo-Turkish War furiously took sides in favor of Asiatism against Russia. Neither the religious element of this war — however secondary it may have been — nor — and this is the main thing! — the cultural-historical idea, which stands higher than diplomacy, the idea of the centuries, indeed, millennia of struggles against Asiatism — not even the Hellenic traditions could dictate a higher standpoint to the Jewish press.
Assuredly! They would have taken sides for Russia if on the Neva a Lasker and Bamberger had politically given the first violin virtuoso concerts, or if Jewry played an even more important financial role in Russia than in Turkey. But from all anti-Russian newspaper articles, the Jewish cry for self-interest now rang out.
À la guerre comme à la guerre! It was the right of the Jews, for they are indeed foreigners who have been forced to wage war with us for 1800 years, and here too I merely state a fact — sine ira et studio. — The "Where do I stand?" rang and rings out from every stance taken by the Jews; they are more "toujours en vedette" than the entire Occidental world.
And as it went for us in the "Kulturkampf question," so it went for us in the oriental question. An opinion deviating from Jewry found no hospitality in the daily press, which has, after all, become almost entirely Jewish-industrial. Seriousness and satires in the German press blindly took sides for the rotten Turkey, financially in Jewish clutches. Speculation dictated opinion.
Added to this was the fact that Russia, spiritually completely unprepared, i.e., without having sought even the shadow of public opinion for itself, stumbled into the war and gave credence to the view that it was not its mission in the Orient, but only an ephemeral thrill of conquest that drove it. The thought that implicitly the arrogance of the great sea- spider England should be broken, through which ex- 3*
