Preface to the First Edition By the "race problem" we understand the question of the nature of the significance of the race factor for historical and cultural development.
The actual starting point for the treatment of this topic was the Jewish question. However, it soon became clear that the Jewish race problem, to which the Jewish question indeed comes to a head, is inseparable from the great race problem in general. This, as well as the profound significance of racial questions for the worldview of our age and for the practice of life, which is perhaps surpassed only by the social question, made it seem justified to cast the anchors a little deeper and to examine the foundations of the prevailing views on race and its significance for the course of history.
We can only arrive at a judgment concerning the decisive moments for the Jewish question if we also subject to a precise analysis those arguments that are also decisive for all of European racial policy. In internal European racial politics, it is essentially a struggle of the Germanic peoples against the Romance peoples, as well as a struggle of the Germanic peoples against the Slavs, and a struggle of all these groups against the Jews. This latter contrast between Aryan and non-Aryan is expressed in the same way in European policy directed outward against the "black" and "yellow" perils. The classic representatives of Aryanism and non-Aryanism for Europe are the Germanic peoples and the Jews. Likewise, we must, as we in the following discuss that which interests us

Vorwort zur ersten Auflage Unter dem „Rassenproblem“ verstehen wir die Frage nach der Art der Bedeutung des Rassenfaktors für die geschicht- liche und kulturelle Entwicklung. Der eigentliche Ausgangspunkt für die Behandlung dieses Themas war die Judenfrage. Im weiteren aber ergab sich bald, daß das jüdische Rassenproblem, auf welches sich ja die Juden- frage zuspitzt, untrennbar ist von dem großen Rassenproblem überhaupt. Dies sowie die tiefe Bedeutung der Rassenfragen für die Weltanschauung unseres Zeitalters und für die Praxis des Lebens, die nur durch die soziale Frage vielleicht übertroffen wird, ließ es gerechtfertigt erscheinen, die Anker etwas tiefer zu werfen und die Grundlagen der herrschenden Anschauungen über das Rassentum und seine Bedeutung für den Geschichts- verlauf zu untersuchen. Wir können zu einem Urteil betreffs der für die Juden- frage entscheidenden Momente nämlich nur kommen, wenn wir auch diejenigen Argumentationen einer genauen Analyse unter- ziehen, die auch für die ganze europäische Rassenpolitik ent- scheidend sind. In der inneren europäischen Rassenpolitik handelt es sich ja im Wesen um einen Kampf der Germanen gegen die Romanen, ebenso um einen Kampf der Germanen gegen die Slaven und um einen Kampf aller dieser Gruppen gegen die Juden. Dieser letztere Gegensatz zwischen Anem und Nichtanem gelangt in gleicher Weise ebenso in der nach außen gegen die „schwarzen“ und „gelben“ Gefahren sich nchtenden europäischen Politik zum Ausdruck. Die für Europa klassischen Vertreter des Anertums und des Nichtanertums sind nun die Germanen und die Juden. Ebenso müssen wir, indem wir im folgenden über die unser Interesse
