34 "With equal certainty, no other racial type can be traced back through millennia like that of the Jews, and no other shows such a constancy of forms, none has so withstood time and the influences of the living space, as this one. Whoever casts a glance at Egyptian and Assyrian monuments, on which Jews were depicted a few thousand years ago with masterful certainty, will come to believe in the immutability of the Jewish type and will be prompted to make comparisons, believing he sees there the portraits of Jews who still walk among us in flesh and blood today."*
The great vagueness of the definition in scientific books is mainly caused by the fact that the ethnographic and the anthropological standpoints of the assessors are not strictly separated.
From an ethnographic standpoint, we know that 2000 years ago there was a Jewish people that had its own language and culture and, as the most important bearer of the monotheistic concept of God, exerted a profound influence on the intellectual development of the most highly developed civilized peoples of Europe today. As a people, as a nation in the ethnographic sense, the Jews ceased to exist about 2000 years ago, for according to Kant, a nation is only a civil whole united by common descent. Their cultural heritage has since passed into the hands of the most highly developed peoples. Nowadays, Western European Jews are no longer full Jews, but rather Germans, Frenchmen, Englishmen, or Portuguese of the Mosaic confession. Political tendencies of the most recent times, which are again working towards nationalization, have not yet prevailed. We can therefore take leave of the ethnographer and ask the anthropologist for advice about physical characteristics.
- "Under Senusret II (12th Dynasty), the immigration of the 37 Aamu depicted at Beni Hasan took place. Their facial features are decidedly Semitic, not to say Jewish. The 12th Dynasty, however, is dated back to the years 2899-2812 B.C. (according to more recent views, around 2100). Thus, we are able to trace the unchanged Jewish type back this far" (Andree).

34 „Mit gleicher Sicherheit läßt sich kein anderer Raſſentypus durch Jahrtausende so zurückverfolgen wie gerade der der Juden und kein zweiter zeigt eine solche Konstanſz der Formen, keiner hat so der Zeit und den Einwirkungen des Lebensraumes wider- standen, als dieſer. Wer einen Blick auf ägyptische und aſſy- nsche Monumente wirft, auf denen Juden vor ein paar tauſend Jahren mit meisterhafter Sicherheit dargestellt wurden, dem kommt der Glaube an die Unveränderlichkeit des jüdischen Typus und er wird angeregt zu Vergleichen, indem er dort die Porträts von Juden zu ſehen glaubt, welche heute noch in Fleisch und Blut unter uns einher wandem.“* Die große Verschwommenheit der Definition in den wis- ſenschaftlichen Büchem wird hauptsächlich dadurch hervor- gerufen, daß der ethnographische und der anthropologische Standpunkt der Beurteiler nicht streng geschieden ſind. Vom ethnographischen Standpunkte wiſſen wir, daß es vor 2000 Jahren ein jüdisches Volk gab, das ſeine eigene Sprache und Kultur hatte und als wichtigster Träger des monotheisti- schen Gottesgedankens einen tiefgreifenden Einfluß auf die geistige Entwicklung der heute am höchsten stehenden Kultur- völker Europas ausgeübt hat. Als Volk, als Nation im ethno- graphischen Sinne, haben die Juden vor etwa 2000 Jahren auf- gehört zu bestehen, denn Nation heißt nach Kant nur ein durch gemeinſame Abstammung vereinigtes bürgerliches Ganzes. Ihr Kulturbesitz ist ſeither in die Hände der höchstentwickelten Völker übergegangen. Heutzutage ſind die westeuropäischen Juden keine vollen Juden mehr, ſondem Deutsche, Franzoſen, Engländer oder Portugieſen moſaischer Konfeſſion. Politische Tendenzen allerletzter Zeit, die wieder auf die Nationaliſierung hinarbeiten, haben noch nicht durchgegnffen. Wir können alſo vom Ethnographen Abschied nehmen und über die körperlichen Eigenschaften beim Anthropologen um Rat fragen. * „Unter Usurteſen II. (12. Dynastie) erfolgte die zu Benihanſſan dargestellte Einwanderung der 37 Aamu. Ihre Geſichtszüge ſind entschieden ſemitisch, um nicht zu ſagen jüdisch. Die 12. Dynastie wird aber in die Jahre 2899—2812 v. Chr. zurückverſetzt (nach neuerer Anschauung um 2100). Soweit alſo vermögen wir den unveränderten jüdischen Typus zurück- zuverfolgen“ (Andree).
