23 race, which created the most perfect language, the world-dominating civilized peoples have emerged. Even such peoples, in whom it is now only sparsely represented and whose historical role is played out, owe to it their foundation, language, and civilization. Recent research makes it more than likely that in gray antiquity, the peoples on the Nile, in Mesopotamia (Babylonia), and in Asia Minor were also exposed to the influence of Nordic blood and European civilization. That Egyptian culture is actually only an offshoot of the Near Eastern one and, moreover, experienced various stimulation and advancement through immigrants of Tyrsenian and Libyan tribes from the north and west, can no longer be disputed; but even Babylonian culture itself is not a creation of the Semitic Assyrians, but rather its foundation was laid by the Sumerians and Akka- dians, the inventors of cuneiform, who according to the preserved skulls, portraits, names of gods, and language samples were most likely of European origin.* Furthermore, the view that the knowledge of metals came to the primordial Europeans from the East can no longer be maintained. Alphabetical writing also has its origin in Europe. In the vast majority of cultural achievements, the peoples of the northern European race were not imitators and borrowers, but inventors and pioneers. As is undisputed today, they have always stood at the forefront of humanity. --- "Hommel had held the view that the Sumerians or Akkadians, the oldest bearers of culture in Mesopotamia, the inven- tors of cuneiform, were of Turanian stock. The excavations by American scholars in Nippur, however, have brought to light a series of pictorial representations of this ancient people that justify a different interpretation. 23 Rasse, welche die vollkommenste Sprache geschaffen hat, ſind die weltbeherrschenden Kulturvölker hervorgegangen. Auch ſolche Völker, in denen ſie heute nur noch spärlich vertreten und deren geschichtliche Rolle ausgespielt ist, verdanken ihr ihre Gründung, Sprache und Geſittung. Neuere Forschungen machen es mehr als wahrscheinlich, daß in grauer Vorzeit auch die Völker am Nil, im Zweitstromland (Babylonien) und in Klein- aſien dem Einfluſſe nordischen Blutes und europäischer Ge- ſittung ausgesetzt waren. Daß die ägyptische Kultur eigentlich nur ein Ableger der vorderaſiatischen ist und außerdem durch Einwanderer tyrſenischen und libyschen Stammes aus dem Nor- den und Westen mancherlei Anregung und Förderung erfahren hat, ist nicht mehr zu bestreiten; aber auch die babylonische Kultur ſelbst ist keine Schöpfung der ſemitischen Aſſyrer, ſon- dem ihr Grund ist gelegt worden von den Sumenem und Akka- dem, den Erfindem der Keilschnft, die nach den erhaltenen Schädeln, Bildniſſen, Göttemamen und Sprachproben höchst- wahrscheinlich europäischen Stammes waren.* Femer läßt ſich die Anſicht, daß die Kenntnis der Metalle den Ureſuropäem aus dem Osten zugegangen ſei, nicht mehr aufrecht erhalten. Auch die Buchstabenschnft hat in Europa ihren Ursprung ge- nommen. In den allermeisten Kulturleistungen waren die Völker der nordeuropäischen Raſſe nicht Nachahmer und Entlehner, ſondem Erfinder und Bahnbrecher. Wieheuteunbestnt- ten, ſo standen ſie von jeher an der Spitze der Menschheit. --- „Hommel hatte die Anſicht vertreten, die Sumener oder Akkader, die ältesten Kulturträger in Meſopotamien, die Erfin- der der Keilschnft, ſeien turanischen Stammes geweſen. Die Ausgrabungen der amenkanischen Gelehrten in Nippur haben aber eine Reihe bildlicher Darstellungen dieſes uralten Volkes zutage gefördert, die zu einer anderen Auffaſſung berechtigen. Dazu hat zuerst die Anſicht ausgesprochen, daß die Sumener * Folgendes ist der an dieſe Stelle angeschloſſene sprachliche Beweis Wilſers: „Bel“ und „Dagon“, bekanntlich die ältesten Namen des Sonnen- gottes im Zweitstromland, finden ſich vereinigt im angelsächſischen „Bæl- dag“ und das ſumensche Wort für Kupfer „urud“ ist nichts anderes als unſer deutsches „rot“, an. raudhi, altſl. ruda, lat. raudus.
