16 At the same time, this would attest to the immeasurably high cultural age of this proto-Armenian original race. A part of this race were then the Jews themselves, who, unlike the other parts, never interrupted their cultural activity.
In recent times, however, the Aryan theory again found quite unexpected support precisely from the anthropological side.
Since the year 1884, the year of the publication of Schrader's "Sprachvergleichung und Urgeschichte" [Comparative Linguistics and Prehistory] and Penka's "Origines Ariacae," scientific research has turned, to a significantly greater extent than before, to the questions of the original homeland of the "Aryans," the physical type, as well as the culture of the still undivided original Aryan people. And so there arose not only numerous treatises on these questions published in journals, but also a larger number of independent works. The overwhelming majority of these differ in two respects from the older works. Firstly, in that their authors no longer sought to solve the problems posed one-sidedly with the means of linguistics, and secondly, in that, with few exceptions, they no longer sought the original homeland of the Aryans (Indo-Germans, Indo-Europeans) in Asia, but rather undertook to prove a part of Europe to be such. Thereby, however, the whole Aryan question entered a new stage, in that it was found that the original homeland of the Aryans coincided with the ancestral land of the Germanic peoples. It was now constructed: The Aryan race was originally identical with the blond Nordic race, in whose bosom the Aryan language and culture developed, which, through migrations and mixtures, were also bestowed upon other, non-Aryan races, which are still called Aryans today, even if the blood of the blond race flows very diluted in their veins, or has already completely disappeared.
But that these conclusions are not a mere historical construction, but rather that they are anthropologically founded, is proven by the occurrence of blond ethnic elements and the finds of dolichocephalic skulls at the ancient Oriental and classical cultural sites. 16 In neuerer Zeit fand jedoch wieder die Anertheone ge- rade von anthropologischer Seite eine ganz unerwartete Unter- stützung. Seit dem Jahre 1884, dem Jahre der Veröffentlichung von Schraders „Sprachvergleichung und Urgeschichte“ und Penkas „Ongines Anacae“ hat sich die wissenschaftliche Forschung in bedeutend höherem Maße als früher den Fragen nach der Ur- heimat der „Aner“, dem physischen Typus, sowie der Kultur des noch ungetrennten anschen Urvolkes zugewandt. Und so ent- standen nicht nur zahlreiche, in Zeitschnften veröffentlichte Abhandlungen über diese Fragen, sondem auch eine größere Anzahl von selbständigen Werken. Die überwiegende Zahl der- selben unterscheidet sich in zweifacher Hinsicht von den älteren Arbeiten. Erstens dadurch, daß ihre Verfasser die gestellten Probleme nicht mehr einseitig mit den Mitteln der Sprach- wissenschaft zu lösen suchten, und zweitens dann, daß sie mit Ausnahme weniger die Urheimat der Aner (Indogermanen, Indoeuropäer) nicht mehr in Asien suchten, sondem einen Teil Europas als solchen nachzuweisen untemahmen. Dadurch aber trat die ganze Anerfrage in ein neues Stadium, indem man fand, daß die Urheimat der Aner mit dem Stammlande der Germanen zusammenfiel. Man konstruierte jetzt: Die ansche Rasse war ursprünglich mit der blonden Nordrasse identisch, in deren Schoß sich ansche Sprache und Kultur entwickelt haben, die durch Wanderungen und Mischungen auch anderen, nicht anschen Rassen zuteil wurden, die heute noch Aner ge- nannt werden, wenn auch das Blut der blonden Rasse sehr ver- dünnt in ihren Adem fließt, oder schon ganz geschwunden ist. Daß aber diese Schlußfolgerungen nicht eine bloße Ge- schichtskonstruktion, sondem daß sie anthropologisch begründet seien, dafür dient als Beweisinstrument das Vorkommen blon- der ethnischer Elemente und die Funde von dolichocephalen Schädeln an den altonentalischen und an den klassischen Kul- turstätten. Das Referat von Fntsch über die Temenhu in Alt- klären. Gleichzeitig würde sich dadurch das unüberblickbar hohe Kultur- alter dieser proto-armenischen Urrasse bekunden. Ein Teil dieser Rasse waren dann die Juden selbst, die zum Unterschied von den anderen Teilen die Kulturtätigkeit nie unterbrochen haben.
