"After I had recognized that there are strong and that there are weak races, I have been primarily intent on observing the former, to fathom their talents and above all to trace the chain of their genealogies. By following this method, I have at last convinced myself that all that is great, noble, and fertile in human creations, science, art, and civilization on earth, leads the observer back to a single point, has sprung from one and the same seed, belongs to only a single family, whose various branches have ruled in all civilized regions of the globe." This superior race is the white race, the ruling family is the Aryan family: in the Germanic peoples, the world-ordering race, the Aryan family has brought forth the highest blossom of world-historical development and still and always will life be granted to every people to the extent that it has kept Germanic blood pure in its veins.
Gobineau was the first to explain all world-historical catastrophes by the decomposition of the peoples' blood as a result of race-mixing and prophesied to his Romance people, the French, devoured by Semitism, their imminent demise, while in enthusiastic words he extols the higher-standing and more capable Germanic peoples to the heavens.
In 1843, Klemm, in his "General Cultural History of Mankind," developed the view that humanity is divided into two connected halves, an active and a passive one. In the spiritual respect, the former shows the predominance of will, the striving for dominion, independence, and freedom; characteristic of it is its restless activity, the striving into the distance and far away, the sense for progress, as well as the drive to research and examine, defiance and doubt. This is clearly shown in the history of the nations that form the active part of humanity: the Persians, the Arabs, the Greeks, Romans, and Germanic peoples. "These peoples wan-

Indem ich dieſe Methode befolgte, habe ich mich am Ende überzeugt, daß alles, was es an menschlichen Schöpfungen, Wiſſenschaft, Kunst, Ziviliſation Großes, Edles, Fruchtbares auf Erden gibt, den Beobachter auf einen ein- zigen Punkt zurückführt, nur einer und dem nämlichen Keim entsproſſen ist, nur einer einzigen Familie angehört, deren verschiedene Zweige in allen geſitteten Gegenden des Erdballes geherrscht haben.“ Dieſe überlegene Raſſe ist die weiße Raſſe, die Herr- scherfamilie ist die ansche Familie: in den Germanen, der weltordnenden Raſſe, hat die ansche Familie die höchste Blüte weltgeschichtlicher Entwicklung getneben und noch fort und fort wird einem jeden Volke in dem Maße Leben beschieden ſein, als es germanisches Blut in ſeinen Adem rein bewahrt hat. Gobineau erklärte zuerst alle weltgeschichtlichen Kata- strophen durch die Zerſetzung des Völkerblutes infolge von Raſſenmischung und prophezeite ſeinem romanischen, vom Semitiſmus zerfreſſenen Volke der Franzoſen den nahen Unter- gang, während er in begeisterten Worten die höher stehenden und leistungsfähigeren Germanen in den Himmel hebt. Klemm entwickelte 1843 in ſeiner „Allgemeinen Kultur- geschichte der Menschheit“ die Anſicht, daß die Menschheit in zwei zuſammengehönge Hälften, eine aktive und eine pas- ſive geschieden ſei. In geistiger Hinſicht zeige die erstere Vor- herrschen des Willens, das Streben nach Herrschaft, Selb- ständigkeit und Freiheit; eigentümlich ſei ihre rastloſe Tätig- keit, das Streben in die Weite und Feme, der Sinn für Fort- schntt, ſowie der Tneb zum Forschen und Prüfen, Trotz und Zweifel. Dies zeige ſich deutlich in der Geschichte der Natio- nen, welche die aktive Menschheit bilden, der Perſer, der Ara- ber, der Gnechen, Römer und Germanen. „Dieſe Völker wan-
