Jewish question, which can only process the given, but not programmatic, materials into conclusions, I could only write down the result to which the existing facts compelled me. Such a book, if it adheres to the duty of scientific objectivity, necessarily has the character of a report and not that of a program. I was therefore obliged to clarify the current developmental tendencies, and that is why I came to a pessimistic conclusion. But even in the book itself, it is stated that the attempts at repatriation are not only the only way, but also a thoroughly healthy way to the regeneration and preservation of the race. Of course, the power of Zionism or analogous movements would have to be incomparably greater than it currently is. This, however, is entirely possible once a correct assessment of the Jewish question has prevailed, whatever the nature of the current developmental tendencies may be. Elsewhere in the book it is pointed out—and in this thesis the very deepest essence of Judaism was seen— that civilized man no longer needs to be a will-less product of circumstances, but rather that he can and “should” consciously shape and form the social situation and societal conditions according to his intellect. I am by no means of the opinion that a development which has been proven to be so pernicious to the people as a whole, to the interests of individuals, and to all higher cultural interests, should be allowed to continue to operate completely undisturbed merely for the sake of its senseless automatism. And since I consider Zionism—once sound criticism has removed the immature from it—to be entirely possible and, from all material and ideal points of view, a demand of reason, my position on this matter arises from this quite naturally. — In order now to avoid any misunderstanding arising from perhaps inadequate diction, I have this time in the concluding chapter more strongly emphasized the relevant passages through some purely stylistic changes and additions.
Since, as noted, the Jewish opposition has so far been the only one, it seemed necessary for me to insert this actually heterogeneous passage here.

IX Judenfrage, die nur die gegebenen, nicht aber programmatische Matenalien zu Schlüſſen verarbeiten kann, konnte ich nur das Ergebnis, zu dem die vorhandenen Thatſachen mich dräng- ten, niederschreiben. Ein ſolches Buch hat, wenn es an der Pflicht wiſſenschaftlicher Objektivität festhält, nothwendig den Charak- ter eines Referats und nicht den eines Programms. Ich war alſo verpflichtet, die gegenwärtigen Entwicklungstendenzen klarzulegen, und deshalb kam ich zu einem peſſimistischen Schluß. Aber auch in dem Buche ſelbst heißt es, daß die Ver- ſuche zur Repatniierung nicht nur der einzige, ſondem auch ein durchaus geſunder Weg zur Regenenerung und Erhaltung der Raſſe ſeien. Allerdings müßte die Kraft des Zionismus oder der analogen Bewegungen eine ungleich größere ſein als ſie der- zeit ist. Das ist aber, wenn erst eine nchtige Beurtheilung der Judenfrage durchgegnffen haben würde, durchaus möglich, mögen auch die derzeitigen Entwicklungstendenzen wie immer geartet ſein. An anderer Stelle des Buches ist darauf hingewie- ſen — und es wurde in dieſer Theſe geradezu das tiefste Weſen des Judaismus erblickt —, daß der Kulturmensch nicht mehr ein willenloſes Produkt der Verhältniſſe zu ſein braucht, ſondem daß er die soziale Lage und die geſellschaftlichen Verhältniſſe zielbewußt nach ſeinem Verstand bilden und formen kann und „ſoll“. Ich bin keineswegs der Anſicht, daß man eine erwieſenermaßen dem Volksganzen, den Intereſſen der Einzelnen und allen höheren kulturellen Intereſſen ſo verderbliche Ent- wicklung bloß ihrem ſinnloſen Automatismus zuliebe durchaus ungestört weiter wirken laſſen müſſe. Und da ich den Zionismus — wenn eine geſunde Kntik das Unreife aus ihm entfemt hat — für durchaus möglich und nach allen matenellen und ideellen Geſichtspunkten für eine Forderung des Verstandes halte, ſo er- giebt ſich daraus meine Stellung wohl von ſelbst. — Um nun jedes einer vielleicht ungenügenden Diktion entspnngende Miß- verständnis zu vermeiden, habe ich diesmal im Schlußkapitel durch einige rein stilistische Änderungen und Zufäße die be- treffenden Stellen stärker unterstnchen. Da, wie bemerkt, die jüdische Gegnerschaft bisher die ein- zige war, schien es mir nothwendig, dieſen eigentlich heterogenen Paſſus hier einzufügen.
