to know whether and in what way the cultural value of any social community is at all dependent on its racial character, i.e., we must first arrive at definite views on the racial problem itself. Since there are no scientifically recognized theories on this subject matter, but only hypotheses, we are faced with the great task of first having to establish for ourselves the firm ground on which the discussion of the special racial value of the Jews can proceed.
In a large part of the book, we will therefore only have to speak about the racial problem in general and only come back to the Jewish race now and then.
At the end of the preface, I would like to bring up a purely formal matter. The guiding intention in the writing of this book was the most objective possible examination of the subject to be treated and the collection of what—unknown to the general public—was already hidden on this topic in journals and brochures. For this reason, and so that my conclusions do not appear as mere subjective opinion, I have therefore, wherever possible, preferred to let other authors speak.
The purpose of the book is not to represent a literary confession of the author, but rather its purpose is the impersonal presentation, for reasons of the intended scientific and possibly political effect, of those materials that can serve for the formation of judgment and the acquisition of clear insights in this difficult field.

VII kennen, ob und in welcher Weise überhaupt der Kulturwert irgend einer sozialen Gemeinschaft von deren Rassentum ab- hängig ist, d. h. wir müssen erst über das Rassenproblem selbst zu bestimmten Ansichten kommen. Da es über diese Matene noch keine wissenschaftlich anerkannten Theonen, sondem nur Hypothesen gibt, so stehen wir vor der großen Aufgabe, uns erst den festen Boden selbst ernchten zu müssen, auf dem die Diskussion über den speziellen Rassenwert der Juden sich be- wegen kann. In einem großen Teil des Buches werden wir daher nur ü b e r d a s R a ss e n p r o b l e m ü b e r h a u p t zu sprechen haben und nur hin und wieder dabei auf die jüdische Rasse zurückkommen. Zum Schlusse des Vorwortes möchte ich noch eine rein for- male Angelegenheit zur Sprache bnngen. Die bei der Abfassung des Buches maßgebende Absicht war die möglichst objektive Be- leuchtung des zu behandelnden Gegenstandes und die Samm- lung dessen, was über dieses Thema — der Allgemeinheit unbe- kannt — schon vorher in Zeitschnften und Broschüren verbor- gen steckte. Aus diesem Grunde und damit meine Konklusionen nicht als bloße subjektive Meinung erscheinen, habe ich es daher, wo es immer anging, vorgezogen, andere Autoren sprechen zu lassen. Zweck des Buches ist es nicht, ein literansches Bekennt- nis des Autors zu repräsentieren, sondem sein Zweck ist die unpersönliche, aus Gründen der beabsichtigten wissenschaft- lichen und eventuell politischen Wirkung erfolgende Unter- breitung derjenigen Matenalien, die zur Ur- teilsbildung und zur Gewinnung klarer Erkenntnisse auf diesem schwiengen Gebiete dienen können.
