an anti-Semitic and a-Semitic current is making itself more and more noticeable in North America, to the same degree that legal immigration restrictions are also growing. The great Jewish migratory stream is hitting ever harder against an ever-higher wall of economic, legal, and social barriers!
It is a fortune for the people that it is blind, and does not see the immeasurable misery by which it is borne; for the economic situation of the Jews can be expressed in one word: not just poverty, but — impoverishment!
The dispersal and fragmentation of the Jewish people currently seems to be the only remedy for its economic distress. Institutions with considerable assets, such as the Alliance Israélite Universelle and the Jewish Colonisation Association, work with great effort and devotion to — better the fate of the persecuted Jews, but are careful, where they promote emigration, not to accumulate the Jews again in large masses at any one point.
In fact, wherever Jews are scattered only in small groups, they are economically better off everywhere. But this system has a consequence that directly counteracts the basic intentions of these institutions, namely assimilation, not just cultural, but racial assimilation, the national downfall of these scattered, disconnected parts of Jewry. This principle would thus lead to the dissolution of Jewry, whose preservation and advancement, however, the above-mentioned institutions want to achieve!
Truly, at the end of such a train of thought, we understand the words of Nordau:
"It would be a miracle if then the Jews, in the face of the unjust and bitter hostility of the peoples, powerless and persecuted, clasped by material misery, just beginning to lose their naive faith in God, 53

es macht sich eine antisemitische und aſemitische Strömung in Nordamenka immer mehr bemerkbar, in welchem Maſſe auch die geſetzlichen Einwanderungsbeschränkungen wach- ſen. Der grosse jüdische Wanderungsstrom stoͤsst immer härter an eine stets hoͤher werdende Mauer von oͤkonomischen, recht- lichen und ſozialen Hemmniſſen! Es ist ein Glück für das Volk, dass es blind ist, und das unermessliche Elend, von dem es getragen wird, nicht ſieht; denn die oͤkonomische Situation der Juden läßt ſich mit einem Worte ausdruͤcken: nicht nur Armut, ſon- dem — Verarmung! Die Zerstreuung und Zerbroͤckelung des jüdischen Volkes scheint gegenwärtig das einzige Heilmittel gegen ſeine wirtschaftliche Not. Institute mit bedeutendem Vermoͤgen, wie die Alliance Iſraelite Univerſelle und die Jewish Colonisation Aſſociation, arbeiten mit grosser Anstrengung und Hingebung daran, das Schickſal der verfolgten Juden zu — beſſem, hüten ſich aber, wo ſie die Emigration be- foͤrdem, die Juden wieder an irgend einem Punkt in grossen Maſſen zuſammenzuhäufen. In der Tat geht es den Juden dort, wo ſie nur in kleinen Gruppen verstreut ſind, wirtschaftlich überall beſſer. Aber dieses System hat eine Folge, die den Grundabſichten dieſer Institute direkt entgegenwirkt, nämlich die Aſſimilation, nicht nur die kulturelle, ſondem die Raſſen-Aſſimi- lation, den nationalen Untergang dieſer ver- sprengten, zuſammenhangloſen Teile des Judentums. Dieſes Pnnzip alſo würde zur Auflöſung des Judentums führen, deſſen Erhaltung und Foͤrderung aber die obigen Institute bezwecken wollen! Wahrlich, am Schluſſe eines ſolchen Gedankenganges verstehen wir die Worte Nordaus: „Es wäre ein Wunder, wenn da die Juden gegenüber der ungerechten und erbitterten Feindschaft der Voͤlker, ohn- mächtig und verfolgt, umklammert von matenellem Elend, eben beginnend, ihren naiven Gottesglauben zu verlieren, 53
