In a quite excellent and original way, Zollschan reduces these assertions to absurdity. We will only follow the most essential part of his train of thought here. The inherited dispositions of all animals for the abilities necessary for their lives become more apparent the more finished a state the animal enters life in; with humans, the child seems to bring nothing with it, but rather to learn everything first. In fact, however, it brings infinitely more with it than the animal that crawls out of the egg fully formed, but everything is in an immature state, because there is so much to be developed in him that it can only be pre-formed in embryo during the 9 months of embryonic life. With the progressive development of the infant's brain, through learning, that is: by chiseling these dispositions (engrams), all these predispositions are transformed into conscious abilities. Man possesses the ability to awaken the inherited instincts slumbering within him, to transform them into intellectual possession; in this "extinguishing" of the instinctual drives and their transformation into rational activity, into conscious intellectual ability, Zollschan sees the task of cultural life. The richness of such instincts, the Mneme, is dependent on the purity and the cultural past of the race. To get a proper concept of the hereditary effects of racial purity, i.e., strict inbreeding, one must keep in mind that every person in 20 generations is the product of more than a million ancestors, and in 30 generations the product of 1000 million ancestors. If all these ancestors come from the same race, then the enormous summation of identical instinctual dispositions is immediately apparent. The intensity of the inherited instincts is therefore strongest among the members of a pure race. The quantity and quality of the Mneme is of course also not the same for all races. The Mneme is the 38
