From Moses to the prophets, to Christianity, to the Reformation, to the French Revolution, to the socialism of our times — that is the triumphal march of those ideas of freedom that had first found their expression in the Jewish Bible! Let us now turn to the field of intellectual and material culture, in which the Semites have allegedly never created anything and still lack any creative ability today. We want to completely disregard that anthropological research has shown that the Mediterranean race, including the Semites, forms a unified group of peoples, identical in blood, which possesses no other community with the Slavic-Germanic race than an exclusively linguistic one. That therefore, the cultural achievements of the Egyptians, the classical Greeks and Romans, as well as those of the Italians, Spaniards, and Portuguese would have to be counted as belonging to the Mediterranean race. And that therefore, because of the physical and blood relationship of all these peoples with the Semites, all these cultural achievements could not be foreign to the Jewish genius either. — There is no need for such a constructed line of reasoning. We want to speak only of the cultural creations of the actual Semites, those groups of peoples who are indisputably the ancestors and closest racial relatives of the Jews. The oldest written records that we have so far been able to survey based on excavations on the Euphrates and Nile reach back beyond the year 3000 B.C. Around this time, Babylon was founded by Sargon, which then around 2200 became the political and cultural center of the Near Eastern world. The oldest monuments, however, suggest a high level of cultural life in the pre-Babylonian period, about whose origins we can say nothing. One thing we can establish, however: the entire Babylonian cuneiform literature we possess, starting from the oldest times known to us, belongs to periods in which the population was long since Semitic. The elevation of Babylon to a central position occurred under the influence of a Semitic migration. And even before that, the records show Semitic 36
