The Significance of the Racial Question. Deeply implanted in every being is the striving for the greatest possible development of life. The most tremendous process of our time, the social struggle, is indeed nothing other than this fight for the possibility of life's development, for a place in the sun, but in the narrower sense it is only a struggle of individual social strata within the same people. But when peoples as a whole want to displace and annihilate one another, when nations as such wrestle for their existence or non-existence, then this social struggle grows to gigantic dimensions, it becomes a racial struggle.
The races fighting each other, when they want to annihilate their racial opponent, search for a legal title, for a s a n c t i o n, and strive to furnish proof that the assertion of their own self and the pushing back of the racial opponent do not spring from purely egoistic motives, but are justified by higher laws, and indeed appear to be commanded in the interest of the salvation of all humanity. For the value of the individual races—so it is argued—is not equal.
While some tirelessly assist in the great construction of human cul- ture, other races have a paralyzing effect, holding back the refinement of the human species, in the negative, Mephistophe- lian principle. And to conceal the brutally egoistic, material motives, this distinction is supposed to 3

Die Bedeutung der Raſſenfrage. Tief eingepflanzt ist jedem Wesen das Streben nach möglichster Lebensentfaltung. Der gewaltigste Vorgang unserer Zeit, der soziale Kampf, ist ja ebenfalls nichts ande- res, als dieser Kampf um die Möglichkeit zur Lebensentfal- tung, um den Platz an der Sonne, aber im engeren Sinne doch nur ein Kampf einzelner sozialer Schichten innerhalb desselben Volkes. Wenn aber Völker als Ganzes einander verdrängen und sich vemichten wollen, wenn Nationen als solche um Sein oder Nichtsein nngen, dann erwächst dieser soziale Kampf zu gigantischen Dimen- sionen, er wird zum Raſſenkampf. Die einander bekämpfenden Raſſen suchen, wenn sie den Raſſengegner vemichten wollen, nach einem Rechtstitel, nach einer S a n k t i o n, und streben damach, den Beweis zu erbnngen, dass die Durchſetzung des eigenen Selbst und die Zurückdrängung des Raſſengegners nicht nur rein egoisti- schen Motiven entspnnge, ſondem durch höhere Geseze gerechtfertigt, im Intereſſe des Heiles der ganzen Mensch- heit geradezu geboten erscheine. Denn der Wert der ein- zelnen Raſſen — ſo wird argumentiert — ist kein gleicher. Während die einen rastlos mithelfen an dem groſſen Aufbau der menschlichen Kul- tur, wirken andere Raſſen lähmend, die Veredlung des Menschengeschlechtes auf- haltend, im negativen, mephistophe li- schen Pnnzip.
