National Judaism.
This word and the phenomenon it designates owe their origin to Antisemitism. Thirty years ago, nothing was yet known of National Judaism. At that time there were also no national Jews, but only Jews who, when asked about their nationality, called themselves Germans, Frenchmen, Englishmen, etc. Only when Antisemitism, in order to present a better appearance to itself and to the world, assumed a national character, and proscribed in the Jews not merely the Jews, but also the foreigners, did many of them respond to the ostracism by admitting, and even eagerly emphasizing, their own national individuality, and by extending the designation of Judaism, which hitherto had only been valid for their religious conviction, to their nationality as well. # Nationaljudenthum. Dieſes Wort und die Erscheinung, die es bezeichnet, verdanken ihre Entstehung dem Antiſemitismus. Vor dreissig Jahren wusste man noch nichts vom Nationaljudenthum. Es gab damals auch keine nationalen Ju- den, ſondem nur Juden, die, wenn man ſie nach ihrer Nationa- lität fragte, ſich Deutsche, Franzoſen, Engländer u. ſ. w. nannten. Erst als der Antiſemitismus, um vor ſich ſelbst und vor der Welt beſſer auszusehen, ſich einen nationalen Charakter beilegte, und in den Juden nicht bloss die Juden, ſondem auch die Fremden proſcnbierte, beantworteten viele derſelben die Aechtung damit, dass ſie ſelbst ihre nationale Individualität zugaben, ja ſogar eifng betonten, und die bisher nur für ihre religiöſe Ueberzeugung in Gel- tung geweſene Bezeichnung des Judenthums auch auf ihre Nationalität ausdehnten.
