From the preceding investigation, it follows with necessity that the emphasis on nationality is not Christian, but that it is even much less Jewish. The term National Judaism and the movement it designates both suffer from an inner contradiction, because Judaism, according to its historical mission, does not have the task of supporting the centrifugal mania for nationality or nationalistic enthusiasm of the peoples, let alone paying homage to it, but rather that of abolishing the individualism of nations and working towards the unification of all people into a single human family. Should Judaism awaken in all its followers the aspiration to become a nation again, it would commit suicide, for it would relinquish the future for a present that is, in the best case, doubtful. Judaism, however, has always lived in the future and for the future; it has never been absorbed by the present, it has never sacrificed the future to the present. If one wishes to call this innermost trait of its essence idealistic, then it can accept this designation.

IV. Aus der vorstehenden Unterſuchung ergibt ſich mit Nothwendigkeit, daß die Betonung der Nationalität nicht chnstlich, daß ſie aber noch viel weniger jüdisch ist. Das Wort Nationaljudenthum und die damit bezeichnete Bewe- gung leiden beide an einem inneren Widerspruch, weil das Judenthum zufolge ſeiner geschichtlichen Miſſion nicht die Aufgabe hat, die centnfugale Nationalitätssucht oder Na- tionalitätsschwärmerei der Völker zu unterstützen, geschweige ihr ſeinerseits zu huldigen, ſondem vielmehr die, den In- dividualismus der Nationen aufzuheben und auf die Verei- nigung aller Menschen zu Einer Menschenfamilie hinzuar- beiten. Würde das Judenthum in allen ſeinen Bekennem das Bestreben erwecken, wieder eine Nation zu werden, so beginge es einen Selbstmord, denn es würde für eine im günstigsten Falle zweifelhafte Gegenwart die Zukunft preis- geben. Das Judenthum hat aber immer in der Zukunft und für die Zukunft gelebt, es ist niemals in der Gegenwart aufgegangen, es hat die Zukunft niemals der Gegenwart aufgeopfert.
