We could now conclude our investigation here, after having demonstrated that the modern emphasis on the national is utterly contrary to the spirit of the Torah, the Prophets, and the Psalms, and to the destiny thereby prescribed for the people of Israel. We might therefore leave it to the reader to answer the question of whether the National Judaism, which is currently asserting itself with such vigor, is in harmony with this spirit and this destiny. It will, however, be beneficial to the assessment of this question if we show what course the idea of the eventual abolition of all national differences and the unification of all peoples into one human family has taken, what disturbances and digressions it was exposed to, and to what extent its formation and realization remain the task of Judaism. For the guiding idea of a people does not strive toward its realization in a straight line and with uninterrupted progress; rather, like the magnetic needle, it experiences deflections through cosmic events, through political and other influences

III. Hier könnten wir nun unsere Untersuchung abschließen, nachdem wir dargethan, dass die modeme Betonung des Nationalen dem Geiste der Thora, der Propheten und Psal- men und der durch dieselben dem Volke Israel vorgezeich- neten Bestimmung durchaus widerstrebt, und wir dürften dem nach dem Leser selbst die Beantwortung der Frage anheimgeben, ob das gegenwärtig mit so viel Lebhaftigkeit sich geltend machende Nationaljudenthum sich im Einklange mit diesem Geiste und dieser Bestimmung befinde. Es wird jedoch der Beurtheilung dieser Frage zuträglich sein, wenn wir zeigen, welchen Verlauf die Idee der einstigen Aufhebung aller nationalen Unterschiede und der Vereinigung aller Völker zu einer Menschenfamilie genommen, welchen Störungen und Abschweifungen sie ausgesetzt war, und inwiefem ihre Ausgestaltung und Verwirklichung nach wie vor die Auf- gabe des Judenthums bildet.
