It is not an escape, but a sacrifice.

The core of the movement now forming in connection with the escape from Russia is far from any ideological experiments. Most of its members, if they are allowed to immigrate to the Land [of Israel], will also work there as hired laborers for a certain period. They know this, they accept this, and they are preparing for it. But they are also preparing for one other thing—to always remember that their private affairs are not enough to encompass their entire soul. He may be a woodcutter or a teacher, an engineer or a writer—first of all, he remains a pioneer. And this is a more noble title than his occupation, whether artisan or even pharmacist. The pioneer can be both this and that, or one thing today and another tomorrow, changing his trade and thereby also his status—but he can never be caught up in his affairs, his status, as a member of a group to which he belongs in a purely technical way. In his eyes, he will always see sufficient security to continue the action, whose final expression and the director's name is: "The Establishment of the Hebrew State," and the name of the play is: "The Idea of the State." Today he plays this role with seriousness, tomorrow he will appear as a schoolteacher, and the day after tomorrow—as an engineer. He plays seriously and with dedication, but in himself he is not a teacher, nor a soldier, nor a bourgeois, nor a worker. He is everything: He is a pioneer.

5. The Class Idea.

There can be no reconciliation here. Between Zionism and the class idea: there will be no trickery, no compromise. Either Zionism will trample and utterly banish the class-based aspiration from among the Hebrew public here for all the days of the building period—or Zionism will not be realized.

The current task of Zionism is to settle, on a limited territory and for a limited time, a sufficient number of Jews to become a majority in the land, so as not to dispossess its non-Jewish inhabitants, under the conditions of the Land of Israel—this is a task of very intensive colonization.
