Every reader has some concept of the process of settlement and its ways in other lands; moreover, it is reasonable for him to recall several cases known to him; let him please find at least one case that will testify that someone succeeded in settling in a land with the consent of its natives.

There is no such thing. The natives, regardless of whether they were cultured people or savages, always fought stubbornly against the settlers (whether they were cultured people or savages). And the fact of whether the settler treated them with indifference or with rudeness was of no value. The Spaniards who conquered Mexico and Peru, or even our own forefathers in the days of Joshua son of Nun, perhaps behaved like robbers; but the English, Scots, and Dutch, the "Pilgrim Fathers," the true pioneers in North America, were ultimately people of a high moral standing—people who wished to offend not only the individual Indian, but the great majority—people who believed with their whole heart that in the free lands that have no border and in a culture of outstretched arms there is enough room for both the whites and the reds. Yet the natives of the land fought with the same cruelty both against the fierce settler and against the kind one.

And there is no need here to dwell on one problem: the question of whether the native of the land fears they want to expel him, or whether he does not fear this at all. On the ancient expanse of today's United States there were never, even in ancient times, more than one or two million Red Indians, and no one even supposed that the white guests would seize every inch of land and leave no room for the reds. And the natives of the land fought not because they clearly saw the "expulsion" before them, but because no native of any land, in any place and at any time, since the dawn of time, can agree to the settlement of foreigners. Every nation, whether it is civilized or not, looks upon its land as its "national home," for it wants to always be and to remain the sole master of the house; it will not agree of its own free will not only to new landlords but even to new partners in its home.
