they developed partly into cosmopolitans of commerce, partly into usurers, exactly according to the law which has already been explained. For these functions, having been excellently adapted for centuries, they will always gain in power, as long as the economic organizational principle of unlimited free competition, which favors speculation and usurious profit, holds sway among the peoples who host them.
Talented like few nations, highly migratory like all peoples developed between the tropics and the temperate zone, yet alien to the nations among which they mix, the Jews are suited to fulfill a vocation which, besides their service to monotheism, is usually not mentioned.
— They are a decomposing, ferment-inducing, cosmopolitan element of the human family of peoples. They do not let themselves be absorbed by the peoples, but are inclined and capable of dissolving the faith, custom, constitution, and economy of other peoples, and of becoming the strongest leaven against limited national stagnation and bogging down.
In this function they have for millennia been bold, in part impudent, but also sharp-witted and critical, and up to the most recent times have brought movement into the inner life of the peoples they have per-

Für diese Funktionen durch Jahrhunderte vorzüglich angepaßt, werden sie immer an Macht gewinnen, so lange das den Spekulations- und Wuchergewinn begünstigende wirtschaftliche Organisations-Pnnzip der schrankenlosen freien Konkurrenz bei den sie bewirthenden Völkem Geltung behauptet. Begabt wie wenige Nationen, höchst wanderungsfähig wie alle zwischen den Tropen und der gemäßigten Zone ausgebildeten Völker, dennoch den Nationen, unter die sie sich mischen, fremd, sind die Juden geeignet, einen Beruf zu erfüllen, der neben ihrem Verdienst um den Monotheismus, gewöhnlich nicht erwähnt wird. — Sie sind ein zersehendes, Gährung erregendes, kosmopolitisches Element der menschlichen Völker-Familie. Sie lassen sich von den Völkem nicht aufsaugen, sind aber geneigt und befähigt, Glauben, Sitte, Verfassung, Wirthschaft anderer Völker aufzulösen, und der stärkste Sauerteig gegen beschränkte nationale Versumpfung und Stagnation zu werden. In dieser Funktion sind sie seit Jahrtausenden keck, zum Theil frech, aber auch scharfsinnig und kntisch geworden und haben bis auf die neueste Zeit Bewegung in das innere Leben der von ihnen durch6*
