. . . Joseph said: Bring your livestock, and I will give you bread for the livestock, since you have no more money. So they brought Joseph all their livestock . . . When that year was over, they came again and said: We will not hide that not only all the money but also already all the livestock is in the hands of our master; we have nothing left but our bodies and our fields . . . So Joseph bought all of Egypt . . . and made the people into serfs . . . . . . and gave them a law, to give the fifth part (of all harvest) as a tribute. . . . Thus Israel dwelt in Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they dominated it and grew and multiplied exceedingly. Gen. 47:13–27.
Exodus from Egypt. The children of Israel grew and begot many children and multiplied and became so numerous that the whole land was full of them. Then a new king came over Egypt, who did not recognize (the privileges that) Joseph (had secured for his tribe) and said to his people: Behold, the children of Israel are multiplying more than we (and are gaining supremacy). We must prudently set them limits, so that they do not become too many. For on them there is no reliance; if a war should arise, they could side with our enemies and fight against us and secede from our empire. And taskmasters were set over them and they were forced to do honest work, for they had to help build the cities. But no matter how they were restricted, they still multiplied and became a plague to the Egyptians . . . Exodus 1:7–12.
I will bring you out of the land of Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites; into a land in which milk and honey flows. Exodus 3:17.

— 375 — . . . Joseph sprach: Schaffet euer Vieh her, so will ich euch für das Vieh Brot geben, da ihr kein Geld mehr habt. Da brachten sie Joseph all ihr Vieh . . . Da das Jahr um war kamen sie abermals und sprachen: Wir wollen nicht verschweigen, daß nicht alles Geld sondem auch schon alles Vieh in den Händen unsres Gebieters ist; wir haben nichts mehr übng als unsre Leiber und unser Feld . . . Also kaufte Joseph das ganze Egypten . . . und machte das Volk zu Leibeignen . . . . . . und gab ihnen ein Gesetz, den Fünften (von aller Emte) als Abgabe zu geben. . . . Also wohnte Israel in Egypten, im Lande Gosen, und sie beherrschten es und wuchsen und mehrten sich sehr. 1. Mos. 47, 13–27. Auszug aus Egypten. Die Kinder Israel wuchsen und zeugeten viel Kinder und mehrten sich und wurden so viele, daß das ganze Land von ihnen voll war. Wir müssen aus Vorsicht ihnen Schranken setzen, daß ihrer nicht zuviel werden. Denn auf sie ist kein Verlaß; wenn sich ein Kneg erhöbe, könnten sie sich zu unseren Feinden schlagen und gegen uns streiten und sich von unserem Reich losfagen. Und man setzte Vögte über sie und zwang sie zu ehrlicher Arbeit, denn sie mußten beim Bau der Städte helfen. Aber wie man sie auch einschränkte, sie vermehrten sich doch und wurden den Egyptem eine Plage . . . 2. Mos. 1, 7–12.
