still uncomprehending of the new ideas, and a small number of passionate comrades, in their overzealousness, often did more harm than good.
To be sure, anti-Semitic congresses in 1881 and 82 in Dresden and in 1883 in Chemnitz had resolved to found an anti-Semitic reform party and had deliberated on its program, and to be sure, anti-Semitic reform associations had been formed in a number of cities, but the resistance of the prevailing rhetoric, the thoughtlessness of the masses, and the influence of the Jewish organs was still too powerful for anything to be accomplished for the time being. The anti-Semitic newspapers for the most part folded again, the anti-Semitic associations for the most part led a pitiful existence or disbanded.
It was recognized that the movement had to be spiritually deepened, strengthened by the quiet dissemination of its ideas, and organized, in order to then re-emerge with greater emphasis.
In 1885, a systematic distribution of writings and a new organization was undertaken from Leipzig. An open forum under the title "Anti-Semitic Correspondence" sought to gather the anti-Semitic elements from all parts of the country again and discussed the question of future systematic agitation. - 332 - den neuen Ideen noch verständnißlos gegenüber, und eine kleine Zahl leidenschaftlicher Geſinnungs-Genossen verdarb im Uebereifer oft mehr als ſie nützte. Wohl hatten antiſemitische Congreſſe im Jahre 1881 und 82 in Dresden und 1883 in Chemnitz die Begründung einer antiſemitischen Reform-Partei beschloſſen und deren Programm berathen, wohl waren in einer Reihe von Städten antiſemitische ReformVereine entstanden, allein der Widerstand der herrschenden Phraſe, die Gedankenloſigkeit der Maſſe und der Einfluß der jüdischen Organe war noch zu mächtig, als daß man für's Erste hätte etwas ausnchten können. Die antiſemitischen Zeitungen gingen zum größten Theil wieder ein, die antiſemitischen Vereine führten meist ein kümmerliches Daſein oder lösten ſich wieder auf. Man erkannte, daß die Bewegung geistig vertieft, durch Ausbreitung ihrer Ideen in aller Stille verstärkt und organiſirt werden mußte, um dann auf's Neue mit größerem Nachdruck hervorzutreten. Im Jahre 1885 wurde von Leipzig aus eine planmäßige Schnften-Verbreitung und Neu-Organiſation in Angnff genommen. Ein offener Sprechſaal unter dem Titel „Antiſemitische Correspondenz“ ſuchte die antiſemitischen Elemente aus allen Landestheilen wieder zu ſammeln und diſcutirte die Frage einer künftigen planvollen Agitation. Die erste Frucht dieſes Beginnens war der auf Anregung des Dr. König (Witten).
