Petition of the Frankfurt Citizenry of July 29, 1612.
"Your Imperial Majesty will, as Your and the Roman Empire's faithful subjects, against the excess of the Jewish idling rabble and their shameful usury, which they, according to their own boasting, through the money of those among us who certainly have little fame with God and men, practice to the highest degree, most graciously protect us and not permit that, for their sake, the Holy Empire's Constitutions and various in this regard judicially issued precedents should be riddled with holes to the deception and ruin of our poor fellow citizens and be nullified."
In other petitions, the Jews are further accused of "consuming, draining, and squandering our and our fellow citizens' poverty and livelihood, — with their money-dealing and usury to make them their servants, indeed to misuse the needy Christians among us for their wicked services." (Compare further the statements of Peter de Clugny, Peter Schwarz, Schenk Erasmus, etc. on pages 32 to 34 etc.)
All these statements prove clearly that purely economic and social causes, and not religious hatred, brought forth the hostility towards the Jews.

- 216 - Eingabe der Frankfurter Bürgerschaft vom 29. Juli 1612. „Ew. Kaiserliche Majestät werden uns als Dero und des Röm. Reiches getreue Unterthanen wider das Uebermaß des jüdischen müßig gehenden Gesindels und ihres schändlichen Wuchers, welchen sie, ihrem eigenen Berühmen nach, durch Derjenigen Geld bei uns, die es gewiß bei Gott und Menschen wenig Ruhm haben, auf’s Höchste bnngen, allergnädigst schüßen und nicht gestatten, daß ihrethalben des heiligen Reiches Constitutiones und unterschiedliche diesfalls genchtlich ergangene Praejudicia eben unseren armen Mitbürgem zu Betrug und Untergang zerlöchert und aufgehoben werden sollen.“ In anderen Eingaben werden die Juden noch beschuldigt „unser und unserer Mitbürger Armuth und Nahrung zu verzehren, auszusaugen und zu verschwenden, — mit ihrem Geldkauf und Wucher sie zu ihren Knechten zu machen, ja die bedürftigen Chnsten unter uns zu ihren verruchten Diensten zu mißbrauchen.“ (Vergleiche femer die Aussprüche von Peter de Clugny, Peter Schwarz, Schenk Erasmus u. s. w. auf Seite 32 bis 34 xc.) Alle diese Äußerungen beweisen klar, daß rein wirthschaftliche und soziale Ursachen und nicht Religions-Haß die Anfeindung der Juden hervornefen. ---
