Petition of the Frankfurt Citizenry of June 10, 1612.*)
““. The Jewish community has gotten greatly out of hand, so that it has become overbearing to the citizenry and the common man and is to blame for the rapidly increasing poverty, namely by virtue of its usury, practiced against the Imperial Constitutions and Recesses.” — In a further petition of June 23, it is pointed out that the Jews practice no honest labor and that for this reason alone they must lead to an impoverishment of the citizenry, since “much stately sustenance and provisioning goes to so many thousand idle souls. For since they cannot live on air, from where else do they get their sustenance but from our sweat and blood? Therefore, they are our feeding and blood-sucking leeches, who do not let up until they have also consumed the marrow from our bones and we are not only ready for the beggar's staff, but until they have also vented their spleen on our lengthy debt-imprisonment.” —
Does that sound like "religious fanaticism"? Or does it not rather speak of a very sober, practical civic sense!

— 215 — Es heißt da u. And.: Eingabe der Frankfurter Bürgerschaft vom 10. Juni 1612.*) „„. Die Judenschaft hat stark überhand genommen, so daß sie der Bürgerschaft und dem armen Mann sehr zu Haupt gestiegen und Schuld ist an der rasch zunehmenden Armuth und zwar vermöge ihres wider die Reichs - Constitutiones und Abschiede getnebenen Wuchers.“ — In einer weiteren Eingabe vom 23. Juni wird darauf hingewiesen, daß die Juden keinerlei ehrliche Arbeit betneben und daß sie schon deshalb zu einer Verarmung der Bürgerschaft führen müßten, da doch „viel stattlicher Unterhalt und Proviantirung auf soviel Tausend müßige Seelen geht. Denn da sie vom Wind nicht leben können, wo nehmen sie denn anders ihren Unterhalt her, als aus unserem Schweiß und Blut? Daher sind sie unsere Kost - und Saug - Egel, die nicht nachlassen, bis sie auch das Mark aus den Beinen verzehrt haben und wir nicht allein zum Bettelstab fertig sind, sondem bis sie auch ihr Müthlein an unserem langwiengen Schuld - Gefängniß gefühlet.“ — Klingt das nach „religiösem Fanatismus“? Oder spncht nicht vielmehr daraus ein sehr nüchtemer praktischer Bürgersinn! In gleicher Weise äußert sich die *) Vergl. Germanicus: „Die Frankfurter Juden und die Aussaugung des Volks - Wohlstandes.“
