admittedly been abolished by the Russian government, but the Kahal nevertheless persists in its moral power. It holds Jewish society together, selects suitable persons for this purpose, and provides for their remuneration. —

If one now considers that a large part of the Jews living in Germany originate from Russia and grew up with the views prevailing there, one should not be surprised if they secretly continue to cultivate the conceptions of the Kahal in our country as well and continue to practice according to them. Many phenomena make this seem probable.

Erwägt man nun, daß ein großer Theil der in Deutfchland lebenden Juden aus Rußland ftammt und in dort herrfchenden Anfchauungen aufgewachfen ift, fo dürfte man fich nicht wundem, wenn fie im Stillen auch bei uns noch die Auffaffungen des Kahal pflegten und nach denfelben fort practicirten.
