limited credit. Hundreds of thousands are sent to them in cash or in bills of exchange, and indeed without any guarantee. The commission agent spends the greater part of his time traveling to known Jews or landowners; once a year he returns home to visit his relatives and to report personally to his employer on the business operations conducted. In this way, the merchant always has the most accurate news about the state of the entire country — viewed, of course, from the Jewish point of view.
Instead of a salary, the commission agents receive certain percentages from the business transacted (½% from the seller and 1% from the employer).
Besides the commission agents, the brokers are downright indispensable for Jewish trade. The business of the broker consists in knowing everything, tracking down everything, bringing the interested parties together, monitoring all the actions of persons who have any connection with the merchant; — in a word, representing all the interests of his principal. The broker is a living price-current, in which the prices, the quantity and quality of the saleable goods, their location, in short, everything is recorded that could interest the buyer.
Almost every Jew is a broker; indeed, one can rightly claim that he is born to it.

Den größten Theil feiner Zeit bnngt der Commiſſionär auf Reiſen zu bekannten Juden oder Gutsbeſitzem zu; einmal im Jahre kehrt er nach Hauſe zurück, um feine Verwandten zu beſuchen und ſeinem Auftraggeber perſönlich Bencht über die gemachten Handels-Operationen zu erstatten. Auf dieſe Weiſe hat der Kaufmann stets die genausten Nachnchten über den Zustand des ganzen Landes, — natürlich vom jüdischen Geſichtspunkte aus betrachtet. Statt des Gehaltes erhalten die Commiſſionäre gewiſſe Prozente von den gemachten Geschäften (¹/₂ von dem Verkäufer und 1% von dem Auftraggeber). Außer den Commiſſionären ſind die Mäkler für den jüdischen Handel geradezu unentbehrlich. Das Geschäft des Mäklers besteht dann, Alles zu wiſſen, Alles aufzuspüren, die intereſſirten Parteien zuſammenzubnngen, alle Handlungen der Perſonen zu überwachen, die mit dem Kaufmann in irgend einer Verbindung stehen; — mit einem Wort, alle Intereſſen ſeines Pnnzipals zu vertreten. Der Mäkler ist ein lebendiger Preis-Courant, indem die Preiſe, die Quantität und Qualität der verkäuflichen Waaren, deren Aufenthaltſort, kurz, Alles das verzeichnet ist, was den Käufer intereſſiren könnte. Mäkler ist fast ein jeder Jude; ja man kann wohl mit Recht behaupten, daß er dazu geboren ist.
