dragged in a thousand old and new wares, not a single one of which we needed—this people, murderous to all a traveler's peace of mind, plagued us so much that often, out of sheer desperation, we locked our room early in the morning and fled into the open.
But one can hardly get rid of them outside either. For like hawks spying the poor chicken, these vultures know how to spot the poor foreigner from a great distance, no matter how nonchalantly he tries to act, and they follow him like a swarm of gnats.
There exists, I believe, nowhere else in the world anything that equals the baseness and shamelessness of the Jewish brokers and agents in Poland. One may wish them to all the devils ten thousand times, one will not be rid of them, and no insult is strong enough to shut their mouths. They pursue one for hours and give one no peace.
“The only thing left is the riding crop; they fear that, and on account of the Jews one should never go out in Poland without a riding crop.”
