“If anything is suited to make one's stay in Lemberg, as well as in Galicia and in all of Poland, unpleasant, it is the Jews, the everywhere-proliferating plague of the peasant and the traveler.
We had during our stay in Lemberg every morning, even before coffee, a whole assembly of them with us. Usually they came when we were still sleep-drunk in our pillows, and presented to us, while we were still sleep-drunk in our pillows, their hundred-and-one concerns.
Three factors, who all three at the same time announced themselves as the actual house factors of our hotel, ten coachmen who, while we were by no means thinking of traveling on, offered to convey us comfortably and safely to the ends of the earth, a dozen matchmakers and facilitators, who were willing to do brokerage business of all kinds, and countless merchants, who our room with

Kohl. „Wenn irgend etwas geeignet ist, Einem den Aufenthalt in Lemberg, sowie überhaupt in Galizien und in ganz Polen zu verleiden, so sind dies die Juden, die überall wuchemde Plage des Bauem und des Reisenden. Wir hatten bei unserem Aufenthalte in Lemberg alle Morgen schon vor dem Kaffee eine ganze Versammlung von ihnen bei uns. Gewöhnlich kamen sie schon, wenn wir noch im Bette lagen, und trugen uns, die wir noch schlaftrunken in den Kissen steckten, ihre hunderterlei Anliegen vor. Drei Factoren, die sich alle drei zu gleicher Zeit als die eigentlichen Hausfactoren unseres Hotels ankündigten, zehn Fuhrleute, die sich, während wir durchaus noch nicht an’s Weiterreisen dachten, erboten, uns nach aller Welt Ende bequem und sicher hinzuschaffen, ein Dußend Kuppler und Faciendenmacher, die zu Mäkler-Geschäften aller Art erbötig waren, und zahllose Kaufleute, die unser Zimmer mit 8*
