Ein Hehler, vollends ein gewöhnlicher Betrüger, verliert durch diese Verbrechen [in den Augen der Juden] nichts an seiner gesellschaftlichen Stellung, es sei denn, daß das Verbrechen am Judenthume verübt wurde. Die Lüge ist etwas so Gebräuchliches, daß man den Werth der Wahrhaftigkeit kaum zu kennen scheint. ... Ehre wird hier mit Gold reichlich aufgewogen; wer Geld hat, hat Achtung, und Niemand fragt nach seiner Ehre. Man wird vielleicht einwenden, das sei die Folge der langen Bedrückung. Aber der Litthauer ist noch viel ärger bedrückt worden als der Jude und ist dennoch mehr geneigt, in Ehrlichkeit und Wahrhaftigkeit eine Befnedigung zu finden. ...
