Fathers and Sons.
All Jewish politics has a single origin. We may designate it with an old saying of Zangwill's, taken in a new sense: "The Jewish Question is a Christian Question." Our manner of life always stands exactly as low as the civilisation around us, and the decrees of the antisemitic leaders have long had more influence upon the honour and livelihood of the Jews than the laws of the State.
Jewish politics, the struggle of slaves against unjust and heavy oppression, has attempted two means against the latter. The Jewish Liberals fought against disfavour. They worked among the Christians in order to weaken their hatred. The Jewish Radicals fight against domination. They worked among the Jews in order to strengthen their power.
Until a short time ago the former had the loudest voice. In the capitals of Western Europe the assembly halls and the leading articles of the Liberal press resounded with their battle-cries against antisemitism. The societies for its repulse were fabulously equipped. The pillars of society came with their prestige; the Jews came with much money. The men of standing and the money soon vanished, and there remained only the Jews and antisemitism. The leading articles about the societies soon became brief paragraphs in the news columns — and in Vienna, at last, the much-laughed-at correction: The Society is still alive; it still has a President and a Secretary! That is the receipt the Jews of Vienna now hold for the many, many thousands which they sacrificed to the purposes of the Society.
For a terrible defeat. The Jews had come together to protest against the insults of an impudent antisemitic minority. Now they must protect their bit of livelihood against a brutal majority, already blunted by habit to the vulgarity of the word. Woe to the vanquished! is the pitiless cry of our enemies, of whose power our middle class has enough to lament.
Still more, however, its sons, before whom fewer and fewer doors into working life stand open, if they will not forsake the dry path. The finest lustre of indentures and certificates fades before the little word "Mosaic," which, like an inverted "Sesame," shuts all the offices and workshops of Christian employers against them. Because the fathers knew nothing better to do than to preach Christianity to the Aryans, so terribly many of the sons must adopt it in order to find a possibility of living. And of those whose honour is not for sale, most settle down in despair upon the lowest places of the learned and the unlearned proletariat.
From a multitude of deplorable facts there thus flows a crushing verdict upon the policy which has hitherto governed Western Jewry. We Zionists would gladly forgo the triumph which fate has prepared for our arguments. Do our opponents of the Liberal era now perceive what a pity it is for the money and the pains which they spent in combating us, when they sallied forth against us in books and papers and speeches?
They know by now that they achieved nothing more thereby than to hold Zionism back. Through this we lost the greater part of their contemporary generation in Western Jewry. Perhaps the honest and discerning among them already regret this too. We have nothing more to endure than the hostility of this one generation. For
