The journals and the surgeons have had work among us once more. In Zablotow our poor brethren have again lost blood and property over a few wretched pieces of merchandise. In the little town next to it the plundering heroes found energetic pupils. A few hours by rail across the frontier, official veils flutter before a scene of combat in which Jews, forever mute or at their last gasp, covered the ground. In Dowlais, finally, the English translation of the forcible Russian word "pogrom" was supplied: some Jews went to their work and came to the hospital, and upon their dwellings there fell a rain of stones that did not come from heaven.
He who forever prophesies misfortune pleases neither himself nor the rest of mankind. Yet the Jewish politician of experience is condemned to this rôle. For the chronicle of our present day will be called by our grandchildren that history of a people which ever justified the worst expectations. It was but yesterday that we said suspicious designs were haunting the Polish peasant's head. A sorrowful to-day turns the suspicion into fact. Who had so much as dreamed of an anti-Jewish France before Rennes became known? The liberalism of England was, until but lately, the Song of Songs of those who write the yearly review in the Jewish calendars. It hindered neither the anti-Semitic league of the British Brothers nor the Aliens Commission, and now in Wales it has been carried to its grave upon the bier on which lay the Jews who were beaten to death because they wished to live by their labour.
If anyone wishes to be taught by facts, this time he can be. When, months ago, that sorrowful thing befell in Bessarabia, explanations broke out on every side: a great hand from afar had kindled the blaze. It was not working-men who had done the beating. It was hated traders who had been beaten. This time there is no talk of the great hand. The attackers, in two places — in Wales certainly — were organised working-men. In England it was working-men who were attacked. But even if the explainers had been right then and were wrong now, this would yield only a sum to be added up, and the total reads: under all circumstances the Jews are outlaws.
But not only those Jews are dead against nature whose blood cries out to our hearts. Many, far more martyrs are made for us by a war of extermination without open violence. There in the East, where hunger has set up its rack for the masses, where long-winded laws have the short meaning: Die, Jew! — there the bloodless Jew-murder of the States works far more terribly than that of the peoples.
One of the many testimonies to this is now being made known to the world: in Lemberg a Jewish congress is at present sitting against the Jewish traffic in girls. Heedlessly the newspaper reader skims the brief notice in his daily paper. Two words only: Jewish traffic in girls —
