We out here have a word to say to you: You go for us, and your whole people is with you. Millions of sorrows, millions of hopes and millions of consciences have we laid upon you — upon you, upon you alone. Our bodies remained behind at home, but our souls you carry with you in your arms. Say: do you know whence you come? say: do you know for whom you go and what you are to do? Out of suffering you come, for your mothers and children you go, and into sunny days you are to bring them. Are you ready? Have you searched yourselves? Will you be able? For see: if you are not armed and pure and strong, then we have not sent you. For our best have we chosen — and now, if they fail, what then remains to us? Greeted to seek for our bones! Go, and be strong! Fear nothing from the enemies! Nor can you do otherwise. The blood of your murdered brothers will fill your hearts, should your own forsake you. Go, and be pure! And the purity of your sisters, who went to their death for their innocence, will cleanse your souls. But whose breast is filled with dread and faltering, who fears the step before him and turns his gaze back toward his houses and his herds — let him grasp his staff and turn back. And whoever does not know himself pure of hatred and of envy, whose brow is furrowed by self-seeking and discord — let him veil his face and turn back. For your faltering shall not unman your brothers, nor your discord poison their veins. Beware lest the conscience of your people come upon you! Out of light and darkness in the wide world our eyes are looking upon you!
From all the winds our curses will fall upon you! And how will you return and open your eyelids? And where shelter your heads from curses? Be pure and strong! And your whole people will bless you. You are only to complete what you have begun in us. See: we did not call you. See: you came to us when our bodies had decayed and our spirits, withered, had succumbed beneath our misery. And you lifted up your voice — at first we scarcely heard, but then it began like a secret, sweet whispering of blissful old remembrance, and it rose like the murmur of a spring in the forest, and cloudward flew your song like the singing of the larks in the blazing spring. You have lifted up our heads. You have folded our hands. You made our eyes shine as with the wine of Carmel. And we set our grandchildren upon our knees and breathed into them a new melody, new songs of life. Will you murder our songs? Will you blacken the lives of our grandchildren? Will you cramp our hands? Bow our necks? If you do that, the earth will quake beneath you, you will shudder before your own shadows, the track of your own feet will terrify and hunt you, If you do that, you are like those gods who create creatures in order to murder their creatures, who beget brief days and eternally devouring nights. Say: will you do that, and quench your own fires? Or will you kindle bonfires of joy upon all the mountains! That the flames may sing and reach up to heaven!
