To the Zionist Students.

The long vacation has begun, and the Zionist youth of the universities now has ample leisure and opportunity to develop a serious and intensive activity in the interest of our great cause. Beside agitation, in public meetings as well as in the family circle and in other private groups, the bibliographical sifting and compilation of the existing literature upon Palestine is one of the foremost tasks that await the Zionist students.

With this in view there has been formed, within the "Society for Technical Studies in Syria and Palestine" (Vienna IX., Türkenstrasse 9), in accordance with the suggestion of Herr A. Neufeld in his article "On the Economic Development of Palestine" ("Die Welt", No. 17 of this year), a sub-committee whose task it is to assign the several works of the Palestine literature for review to those students and specialists who report themselves to it for co-operation, and to provide for the practical carrying out of the archive work.

In order that everyone may be clear as to the manner of the work of registration, we refer here once more to the above-mentioned article of our fellow-partisan Neufeld. It runs, among other things:

"The first requirement is to become acquainted with the land in which one means to work, and that, of course, upon the basis of previous literary study. To this end we must lay down for ourselves a complete bibliography of Palestinensia, especially from the geographical point of view. I refer to Röhricht's work, "Bibliotheca Geographica Palaestinae", Berlin 1890, containing the material down to 1878. For the period 1891—1897 the "Bibliotheca Geographica" of Baschin, Berlin (last edition 1900), contains all the accessible books, periodicals and cartographical works. The "Annales de Géographie" — "Bibliographie géographique annuelle" — which appeared from 1891 to 1899, contain the most important geographical writings upon Palestine, with reviews. The journals of the various Palestine societies, of the "Palestine Exploration Fund" since 1865, of the "German Society for the Exploration of Palestine" since 1878, of the "Russian Orthodox Palestine Society", etc., contain a quantity of interesting material. In the German journal especially, moreover, the new publications in the field of Palestine research are discussed. In the "Orientalische Bibliographie" (1887—1900) and in the current numbers of "Luzacs Oriental List" (London) there is likewise much material brought together from the reports of the Oriental theological missions, from colonial and other periodicals. The perusal of the current numbers of these journals will help us to complete the bibliography of Palestine for our purpose."

"During the compilation of the Palestine bibliography we begin to lay out an onomasticon of all the localities of Palestine, by entering the name of each single locality upon a separate card. The purpose of this card-catalogue is to receive the economic data found in the literature for each locality. I refer to the onomastic work "Survey of Western Palestine, Name Lists" (published by the "Palestine Exploration Fund")."

"Each reviewer enters upon paper of uniform size the localities met with in the book upon Palestine (for each locality and each object a separate line, for the sake of clearness) and the economic data collected concerning them in the book (natural products, means of communication, etc.). For the sake of easier orientation and control, the page of the book is noted with each locality. The material thus won by the individual reviewers is collected at a central office and there turned to account, by entering upon each single onomastic card the economic data gathered by the various reviewers concerning the locality in question, the names of the reviewers of the book and the page being given in abbreviation."

To the Zionist students there goes forth herewith the invitation to zealous co-operation in this fundamental work.
