Zionist Conferences

of the 16th and 17th of June, 1901, respectively.

Conference of the Galician Zionists.

In accordance with the resolutions of the Olmütz Zionist Convention (Resolution II. to the point "Organisation"), the Austrian Provincial Committee convenes a general Zionist conference of the Galician societies at Lemberg for the 16th and 17th of June of this year. A great and difficult labour will devolve upon the conference, above all the reorganisation of the party in Galicia and its incorporation into the general Austrian organisation. In earnest and matter-of-fact discussion an understanding will be reached upon the complicated questions which arise for Zionist activity out of the peculiar Galician conditions. As at the Olmütz party convention, theses will be drawn up and debated in calm objectivity. Everything, therefore, that bears a purely demonstrative, agitatory character is to be kept unconditionally at a distance. The necessary precondition for a fruitful propaganda will be the creation of a new and strong organisation; this alone will at the same time be able to furnish the foundation for an ordered activity in the direction of the intellectual, economic and physical raising of the Galician Jews.

Analogously to the Olmütz organisation statute, only organised societies have the right to send delegates, namely, societies whose membership amounts to up to 50 one, from 50 to 100 two, from 100 to 200 three delegates, and so on. Besides these, seat and vote belong to the members of the Actions Committee and of the Provincial Committee, to the reporters, and to one representative of each of the party organs.

For the present the following agenda has been fixed:

1. The condition of the Jews in Galicia. Reporter: Dr. D. Malz (Lemberg).
2. Report on the present state of Zionism in Galicia. Reporter: Dr. S. Rosenheck (Kolomea).
3. Organisation. Reporters: Dr. M. Braudé (Stanislau) and Dr. Wahrhaftig (Cracow).
4. Agitation. Reporters: Dr. R. Jonas (Stanislau) and Dr. A. Kornhäuser (Iaslo).
5. The Press. Reporters: D. Schreiber (Lemberg) and M. Buber (Vienna).
6. The condition of the colonists and labourers in Palestine. Reporters: Dr. S. Rapaport (Lemberg) and A. Stand (Lemberg).
7. The Hebrew language. Reporter: L. Taubes (Kolomea).
8. Miscellaneous.

All proposals touching the agenda, the several papers, and the conference in general should be transmitted to the preparatory committee through the medium of the editorial office of the "Wschod," Lemberg, Kosciuszkogasse 3, whither also the announcement of delegates and the communication of the exact hour of arrival are to be sent as soon as possible. To the same address any inquiries are to be directed.

The conference is an assembly under § 2 of the Law of Associations. The delegates' cards will be handed out personally at Lemberg.

The exact place of the conference will be made known in the next numbers of the "Welt" and of the "Wschod."

The Zionist societies are most urgently requested to proceed at once to the election of their delegates in accordance with their membership.

Delegates' Conference of the Bukovina Zionists.

As we are informed by telegraph, the delegates' conference of the Bukovina Zionist societies will take place on the 16th of June at Suczawa. In connection with it a great popular festival will be held.

Conference of the American Zionists.

The fourth annual conference of the American Zionists has been fixed for the 16th and 17th of June of this year. Upon the agenda stand, among other matters: reports and discussions upon the work hitherto accomplished by the Zionists in America and upon the standpoint and direction of the future agitation, as well as a discussion upon the condition of the Jews in Palestine, the preliminary consideration of the motions for the elections to the Fifth Congress, and finally the new election of the Central Committee. On the evening of the 16th of June a mass meeting will take place in the Musical Fund Hall. A memorial publication is to be issued, for which abundant literary material is available. In honour of the delegates a great banquet is to be given.
