Through the opening, in August of this year, of the Beirût branch of the "Anglo-Palestine Company Ltd.", this place has gained a very topical significance for us, so that it appears fitting to offer the readers of this journal a survey of the principal conditions of Beirût, which is done in what follows.

Beirût,

capital of the Wilajet (province) of the same name. — Important port. — Number of inhabitants (1906) about 140,000.

The Wilajet of Beirût comprises three territorially separate portions:

a) The town district of Beirût, which forms an enclave of the Christian autonomous province (independent Liwa) of the Lebanon. Area 22 sq. km (according to Huber's map of the Lebanon).

b) North of the Lebanon province, a coastal region of about 8,000 sq. km — beginning with the (already non-Lebanese) twin town of Tarabulus (Tripoli)—El Mineh and reaching in the north as far as the Jebel Akra (south of the mouth of the Orontes). Sub-districts (Liwas): Lâdikije and Tarabulus.

c) South of the Lebanon province, the region belonging to Palestine between the sea and the Jordan — beginning with the (already non-Lebanese) town of Saida, and reaching southward to the province of Jerusalem. This region comprises about 9,000 sq. km. Liwas: ‘Akkâ and Nabulus.
