is not, as other peoples have misunderstood it, the end of the world, but rather the completion of the developmental history and education of the human race.
We stand on the eve of this historical Sabbath and have to prepare ourselves for our last mission through the understanding of our religion of history.
Not a word of our holy Scriptures will be correctly understood as long as one does not know the viewpoint from which the Jewish genius produced them. — Nothing is more foreign to the spirit of Judaism than the egotistical salvation of the soul of the isolated individual, the main viewpoint of religion according to modern conceptions. — Judaism nowhere separates the individual from the family, the family from the nation, the nation from humanity, humanity from the organic and cosmic creation, and this from the Creator. Judaism has no other dogma than its doctrine of unity.
But this dogma is not for it a rigid, not an externally given and therefore barren, not a dead faith, but rather a living, creative insight, constantly reproducing itself anew from its spirit, which is rooted in family love, blossoms in patriotism, and bears its ripe fruits in modern, regenerated human society.
— Judaism would share the fate of the religions that have emerged from it, to rigidify into dogmas, to die off, and to be dissolved in the conflict with modern science, were it not itself the creator of its sublime knowledge of God, were its religious doctrine not the product of its life. — Judaism is not a passive religion, but an active insight, which has grown organically with the Jewish nationality. — Judaism is above all a nationality, whose history, enduring for millennia, goes hand in hand with that of humanity, a
