— So deeply have we sunk — we have already experienced it once in Austria — that we must welcome the misfortune of our armies as a piece of good fortune. "World history is the world's court." — What we perpetrated in the sixteenth century, we still have to atone for today. Who can foresee the catastrophes that still lie ahead of us, because our modern development has been nipped in the bud? — Certainly, every conflict of nations that can still ignite today only for national independence will conclude with equal rights for all, including those peoples who fight against it. But by what means this final goal will be achieved, which peace-loving or battle-ready German patriot even dares to think of it?
The times of racial domination are over; even the smallest people, whether it belongs to the Germanic or Romanic, the Slavic or Finnish, the Celtic or Semitic race, as soon as it asserts its claims and rights to a place among the culturally historic peoples, can count on the sympathies of the almighty Western cultural peoples, who today have gained a faithful ally in the regenerated Italian people. Like the patriots of all other unfortunate peoples, the German patriots, too, can only achieve the goal of their aspirations in a sincere alliance of friendship with these most advanced and powerful peoples of the earth.

192 — So tief ſind wir geſunken — wir haben es schon ein Mal in Oestreich erlebt — daß wir das Unglück unſrer Knegsheere als ein Glück begrüßen müſſen. „Die Weltgeschichte ist das Weltgencht.“ — Was wir im ſechzehnten Jahrhundert verbrochen, haben wir noch heute zu büßen. Wer vermag die Katastrophen vorher zu ſehen, die uns noch bevorstehen, weil unſre modeme Entwicklung im Keime erstickt worden? — Sicher wird jeder Völkerkampf, der heute nur noch um die nationale Unabhängigkeit entbrennen kann, mit der Gleichberechtigung aller, auch derjenigen Völker, die gegen dieſelbe kämpfen, zum Abschluß kommen. Aber durch welche Mittel dieſes schließlich Ziel erreicht wird, welcher fnedfertige oder kampfbereite deutsche Patnot wagt es nur, daran zu denken? Die Zeiten der Racenherrschaft ſind vorüber; auch das kleinste Volk, mag es zur germanischen oder romanischen, zur ſlavischen oder finnischen, zur celtischen oder ſemitischen Race gehören, ſobald es ſeine Ansprüche und Rechte auf einen Platz unter den culturhistonschen Völkem geltend macht, darf auf die Sympathieen der allmächtigen westlichen Culturvölker rechnen, welche heute im regenenrten italienischen Volke einen treuen Bundesgenoſſen gewonnen haben. Wie die Patnoten aller andem unglücklichen Völker, können auch die deutschen Patnoten nur in einem aufnchtigen Freundschaftsbündniß mit dieſen fortgeschnttensten und mächtigsten Völkem der Erde das Ziel ihrer Bestrebungen erreichen.
