which has shattered every racial dominion in its own midst, racial antagonism is coming to an end today.
With racial antagonism, the class struggle also ceases; the equal rights of all social classes follow those of all races on its heels, and is ultimately only a scientific question of social economics.
A final racial struggle, however, seems unavoidable if German politicians do not manage to resist the powerful reactionary current, which, in every collision of Germany with the Romanic peoples, also draws the most advanced German democrats into its romantic-demagogic swindle. — The medieval reaction has already succeeded twice in our century — once during the “War of Liberation” and recently again during the Italian War — in foisting upon the modern striving of the German people for political and social rebirth the lust for racial dominion of those Germanic warlords favored in the Middle Ages, who see themselves as the sovereigns and the people as their serfs. — Nothing guarantees that in another conflict between Italy and Austria, the German democracy will not for a third time fall into the vortex of reaction and be drawn with it into a racial struggle, the outcome of which, of course, can be in no doubt for us.

184 welche in ſeiner eigenen Mitte jede Racenherrschaft zertrümmert hat, geht heute der Racenantagonismus zu Ende. Mit dem Racenantagonismus hört auch der Klaſſenkampf auf; die Gleichberechtigung aller geſellschaftlichen Klaſſen folgt jener aller Racen auf dem Fuße, und ist schließlich nur noch eine wiſſenschaftliche Frage der Sozialökonomie. Ein letzter Racenkampf scheint jedoch unvermeidlich zu ſein, wenn die deutschen Politiker es nicht verstehen, ſich der gewaltigen reaktionären Strömung zu widerſetzen, welche in jeder Colliſion Deutschlands mit den romanischen Völkem auch die fortgeschnttnen deutschen Demokraten in ihren romantisch-demagogischen Schwindel hinein zieht. — Es ist der mittelalterlichen Reaktion schon zwei Mal in unſerm Jahrhundert gelungen — ein Mal während des „Befreiungskneges“ und kürzlich wieder während des italienischen Kneges — dem modemen Streben des deutschen Volkes nach politischer und ſozialer Wiedergeburt die Racenherrschaftsgelüste jener im Mittelalter bevorzugten germanischen Knegsherren unterzuschieben, welche ſich ſelbst als die Landesherren und das Volk als Landsknechte anſehen. — Nichts bürgt dafür, daß in einem abermaligen Conflicte zwischen Italien und Oesterreich die deutsche Demokratie nicht zum dntten Male in den Strudel der Reaktion gerathe und mit ihr in einen Racenkampf gezogen werde, deſſen Ausgang freilich für uns nicht zweifelhaft ſein kann.
