The inner motives, which are put forward in the present letters for the national rebirth of Israel, align with the current state of Jewish scholarship.
"The history of the post-Talmudic period," says the most eminent modern Jewish historian*), "thus still has a national character; it is by no means a mere history of religion or of the church."
"As the history of a people," our historian continues, "Jewish history is far from being a mere history of literature or of the church, as which ignorance and one-sidedness brand it; rather, the literature and the religious development, just like the highly tragic martyrology that this tribe or this community had to record, are only individual moments in the course of its history, which do not constitute its essence."
Historical criticism has taken the place of the rationalistic criticism of those "Reformers" who wanted to separate the political from the religious in Judaism, or who the deep national wellspring of life, to which...

X Die innem Motive, welche in den vorliegenden Bnefen für die nationale Wiedergeburt Israels geltend gemacht werden, schließen ſich dem heutigen Stande der jüdischen Wiſſenschaft an. „Die Geschichte des nach-talmudischen Zeitraums,“ ſagt der hervorragendste modeme jüdische Hiftonker*), „hat alſo noch immer einen nationalen Charakter; ſie ist keineswegs bloße Religions- oder Kirchengeschichte.“ „Als Geschichte eines Volksstammes“, fährt unſer Hiftonker fort, „ist die jüdische Geschichte weit entfemt, eine bloße Literatur- oder Kirchengeschichte zu ſein, wozu ſie die Unkunde und die Einſeitigkeit stampeln, ſondem die die religiöſe Entwicklung ſind, ebenſo wie das hochtragische Märtyrologium, das dieſer Stamm oder dieſe Genoſſenschaft einzuzeichnen hatte, nur einzelne Momente in ſeinem Geschichtsverlaufe, welche nicht das Weſen deſſelben ausmachen.“ Die hiftonsche Kntik ist an die Stelle der rationalistischen jener „Reformatoren“ getreten, welche das Politische von Religiöſen im Judenthum trennen wollten, oder die den tiefen nationalen Lebensbom, welchem --- *) D.
