269 was, or that, because the conditions for existence were not suf- ficient, it dispersed; – but no people has yet died of infertil- ity. And yet the mass of every people has only ever married among themselves, because for any rural population the circle of acquaintances from which the missing spouse can be taken never extended beyond the immediate vicinity of the hometown. One could much rather claim the complete opposite of the cities and of the nobility, who only sought to prevent social mésalliances, but in whose marriages eth- nic inequalities occur much more frequently. But quite apart from that, inbreeding within a human circle of ten to eleven million no longer bears the slightest resemblance to inbreeding within a close circle of relatives. Various authors, based on the larger number of mentally ill among the Jews, have painted the future of the Jews in the blackest colors. Reibmayr attributes all bio- static advantages and disadvantages of the Jews to inbreeding. The Jews had already crossed the boundary where inbreeding is still of benefit, and the harmful consequences of extreme inbreeding already far outweighed the beneficial ones. Ruppin rightly considers this to be painting a black picture. The Jew, who possesses a particularly finely and sensitively organized nervous system that reacts to stimuli with greater sensibility than the nerves of a robust peasant, is therefore by no means a neurasthenic. And the circumstance that in Prussia there are 5 mentally ill per 1000 Jews, and 2.5 per 1000 Christians, in Hungary 2 per 1000 Jews, and 1.4 per 1000 Christians, is also not particularly alarming when one considers the particular causes for the acquisition of mental illnesses. To this is added that in the countries of cultural refinement, the "ladies" only think of defending their beauty and prolonging their youth, and therefore guard against the child, which signifies the end of beauty and youth. Hence the lower birth rate in ancient Rome and now in France and North America. But also in German Bohemia the fertility is lower than in Czech Bohemia, and among the Jews of the West it is already much lower than among those of the East.

Und doch hat die Maſſe jedes Volkes immer nur untereinander geehelicht, weil ja bei jeder Landbevölkerung der Bekanntenkreis, aus dem der fehlende Ehegatte geholt werden kann, nie über die nächste Umgebung des Heimatsortes hinausreichte. Ganz das Gegentheil könnte man viel eher von den Städtem und von dem Adel behaupten, die ja nur tracht- ten, ſoziale Meſallianzen zu verhindem, in deren Ehen eth- nische Ungleichheiten aber viel häufiger vorkommen. Aber ganz abgesehen davon, hat die Inzucht innerhalb eines Menschenkreiſes von zehn bis elf Millionen mit der Inzucht im engen Verwandtenkreiſe nicht mehr die mindeste Ähnlichkeit. Verschiedene Autoren haben, gestützt auf die größere Anzahl Geisteskranker unter den Juden, die Zukunft der Juden in den schwärzesten Farben gemalt. Reibmayr führt alle bio- statischen Vortheile und Nachtheile der Juden auf Inzucht zu- rück. Die Juden hätten die Grenze bereits überschntten, wo die Inzucht noch von Nutzen sei, und die schädlichen Folgen der extremen Inzucht seien gegenüber den nützlichen bereits weit überwiegend. Mit Recht hält dies Ruppin für Schwarz- malerei. Der Jude, der ein beſonders fein und empfindlich organisiertes Nervenſystem beſitzt, das mit größerer Senſibilität auf Reize reagiert als die Nerven eines robusten Bauem, ist deshalb noch lange kein Neurastheniker. Und der Umstand, daß in Preußen auf 1000 Juden 5, auf 1000 Chnsten 2.5, in Ungam auf 1000 Juden 2, auf 1000 Chnsten 1.4 Geisteskranke entfallen, hat auch nichts beſonders Beunruhigendes, wenn man die beſonderen Urſachen für die Erwerbung von Geisteskrank- heiten berücksichtigt. Dazu tntt, daß in den Ländem des Kulturraffinements die „Damen“ nur daran denken, ihre Schönheit zu vertheidigen und ihre Jugend zu verlän- gem, und sich deshalb gegen das Kind wehren, welches das Ende der Schönheit und Jugend bedeutet. Deshalb der genngere Kinderreichtum im alten Rom und jetzt in Frankreich und Nordamenka. Aber auch im deutschen Böhmen ist die Fruchtbarkeit gennger als im tschechischen Böhmen, und bei den Juden des Westens schon ſehr viel gennger als bei denen des Ostens.
