93 type. Beethoven, the greatest musical genius, was short and ugly, his skull broad, his hair deep black, his complexion as well as his eyes deep dark (Frimmel). In fact, a strikingly large number of geniuses have been shorter than the average height, so that short stature has already been considered a characteristic sign of genius. Lombroso asserts, the genius is black-haired. Indeed, dark-hairedness is certainly more frequently associated with a genial disposition than blondness (Hertz).
Stratz believes that in many cases a connection between the respective physical constitution and intellectual significance is assumed, in the sense that small, stocky, and thick-headed people are considered smarter and more talented. Finally, let us recall the well-known saying of Democritus: Homo longus raro sapiens. It goes without saying that with all such aperçus, as for example with the Aristotelian paradox that the smartest people have the smallest brains, we are not dealing with binding truths, but only with warnings against wanting to draw summary conclusions about the special qualities of the intellectual and spiritual life from vague externalities. Thus, it is, for example, a misfire of the Germanic theorists, which forbids any more detailed consideration right from the outset, to infer the inner measure of worth from the fullness of force of the outer form. According to this principle of classification, then, among all animal creatures, the extinct sauropsids would have to be designated as the most intelligent.
Ethnology shows us that the intellectual development of a race is not indicated by its appearance. The Japanese, from whom no one will deny the name of a first-rank cultural people, are hardly to be called handsome by our standards; nevertheless, they have not only assimilated European culture in the shortest time, but have also already enriched it with valuable components, whereas the Germanic peoples needed more than a thousand years to process classical culture in the same way. The highly gifted Mandingo belong to the ugliest Negroes. Tat- sächlich ist eine auffallend große Zahl von Genies kleiner als die Mittelgröße gewesen, so daß man gennge Körpergröße be- reits als ein charaktenstisches Zeichen des Genies hat betrach- ten wollen. Lombroso behauptet, das Genie ist schwarzhaang. Wirklich ist Dunkelhaangkeit sicher häufiger mit genialer An- lage verbunden als Blondheit (Hertz). Stratz meint, daß vielfach ein Zusammenhang zwischen der jeweiligen Körperbeschaffenheit und der geistigen Bedeu- tung in dem Sinne angenommen wird, daß die kleinen, gedrun- genen und dickköpfigen Menschen für klüger und begabter gel- ten. Schließlich sei an das bekannte Wort des Demoknt er- innert: Homo longus raro sapiens. Selbstverständlich handelt es sich bei allen solchen Apercus wie etwa bei dem Anstotelischen Paradoxon, daß die klügsten Menschen die kleinsten Hime haben, nicht um verbindliche Wahrheiten, sondem nur um Wamungen, aus vagen Äußerlichkeiten summansche Schlüſſe auf die besonderen Qualitäten des Geistes- und Seelenlebens ziehen zu wollen. So ist es z. B. ein Fehlschuß der Germanentheore- tiker, der jedes genauere Eingehen geradezu von vomherein verbietet, von der Kraftfülle der äußeren Gestalt auf das innere Wertmaß zu folgem. Diesem Einteilungspnnzip zufolge müſsten dann etwa unter allen animalischen Geschöpfen die ausgestor- benen Sauropſiden als die klügsten zu bezeichnen sein. Die Völkerkunde zeigt uns, daß die geistige Entwicklung einer Raſſe nicht durch ihr Äußeres angezeigt ist. Die Japaner, denen niemand den Namen eines Kulturvolkes ersten Ranges absprechen wird, sind nach unseren Begnffen kaum hübsch zu nennen; trotzdem haben sie sich nicht nur die europäische Kul- tur in kürzester Zeit angeeignet, sondem dieselbe auch bereits um wertvolle Bestandteile bereichert, während die Germanen mehr als tauſend Jahre brauchten, um die antike Kultur in derselben Weiſe zu verarbeiten. Die hochbegabten Mandingo gehören zu den häßlichsten Negem.
