91 lower stages, where the food is coarser and less prepared or not at all and therefore requires greater exertion of the chewing apparatus, may therefore be a further cause of dolichocephaly in many peoples. The contents of the skull are thereby pushed upward and forward and backward, while expansion in width is met with obstacles from the counter-pressure of the temporal muscles responsible for the chewing action.
While Nyström explains the emergence of long-headedness in this way, the genesis of brachycephaly, according to him, is based on the reduced pull of the neck muscles due to a changed posture and above all on the increased pressure from within during stronger intellectual activity.
Strenuous mental work, especially in several successive generations of a family, can have a retroactive effect on brain mass, brain formation, and therefore also on the breadth index and other skull proportions. The skull of children is composed of displaceable, soft parts, and the brain can be reshaped by mental work just as muscles are by physical work. As in all organs, here too the physical form adapts to the function. With greater use, the organ used also grows; the brain is no exception. Should the cranium behave differently toward the growing brain than any other part of the skeleton?*
Thus, as Nyström proved through experiments, the pressure of the brain and blood, which is increased by mental exertion,
- Even before Nyström, in the year 1899, Jacobs had represented this viewpoint. Jacobs based his argument on the investigations of Ammon, according to which the skull index of the Germanic peoples has risen from 77 to 83. "This increase could not have arisen through racial crossing, but only through the increase in brain volume, which primarily causes a widening of the skull, which is obvious given the structure and course of the sagittal suture. The skull index is not a characteristic of race, but only a characteristic of the more affluent intellectual class, a measure for the development of the brain. And," he continues, "it is quite self-evident that the Jews, who for millennia have relied exclusively on brain work, have acquired a higher index and have gradually become short-headed."
"We maintain: To want to identify the Jews because of this skull index with the homo Alpinus, which is brachycephalic on the basis of mountain life—as almost all anthropologists do—is sheer nonsense.

91 niederen Stadien, wo die Nahrung gröber und weniger oder gar nicht zubereitet ist und daher eine größere Anstrengung des Kauapparates erfordert, mag daher eine weitere Ursache der Dolichocephalie bei vielen Völkem sein. Der Inhalt des Schä- dels wird hiebei in die Höhe und nach vom und hinten getneben, während die Erweiterung in die Breite durch den Gegendruck der die Kauaktion besorgenden Schläfenmuskeln auf Hindemisse stößt. Während Nyström auf diese Art sich das Zustande kommen der Langschädeligkeit erklärt, beruht nach ihm die Genese der Brachycephalie auf dem verminderten Ziehen der Nacken- muskeln infolge geänderter Lebenshaltung und vor allem auf dem vermehrten Druck von innen bei stärkerer intellektueller Tätigkeit. Es kann angestrengte Geistesarbeit, beſonders in mehreren Gliedem aufeinanderfolgender Generationen einer Familie, auf Gehimmasse, Gehimgestaltung und daher auch auf Breiten- index und andere Schädelverhältniſſe zurückwirken. Der Schädel der Kinder ist aus verschiebbaren weichen Teilen zu- ſammengeſetzt, und das Gehim kann durch geistige Arbeit ebenso umgebildet werden, wie die Muskeln durch körperliche Arbeit. Wie in allen Organen, paßt ſich auch hier die Körper- bildung der Funktion an. Mit dem stärkeren Gebrauch wächst auch das gebrauchte Organ; das Gehim macht davon keine Aus- nahme. Soll ſich die Schädelkapſel dem wachſenden Him gegen- über anders verhalten wie irgend ein anderer Teil des Knochen- gerüstes?* Wie alſo Nyström durch Verſuche bewies, ſucht der Druck des Gehimes und des Blutes, der durch geistige Anstrengung * Schon vor Nyström, im Jahre 1899, hatte Jacobs dieſen Standpunkt vertreten. Jacobs stützte ſich auf die Unterſuchungen Ammons, nach denen der Schädelindex der Germanen von 77 auf 83 gestiegen ist. „Dieſe Steigerung könne nicht durch Raſſenkreuzung entstanden ſein, ſondem nur durch die Zunahme des Gehimvolums, welche in erster Linie eine Verbreiterung des Schädels bewirkt, was bei dem Bau und Verlauf der Pfeilnaht auf der Hand liegt. Der Schädelindex ſei nicht ein Kennzeichen der Raſſe, ſondem nur ein Kennzeichen des reicheren intellektuellen Standes, ein Maßstab für die Entwicklung des Gehims. Und, ſetzt er fort, es ist ganz ſelbstverständ- lich, daß die Juden, die ſeit Jahrtauſenden ausschließlich auf Gehimarbeit
