The Scientific and Historical Foundations of Race Theories. It has always been evident from direct observation that human beings, according to skin color and according to other essential characteristics, according to the diversity of their mental and spiritual dispositions, fall into a number of large groups, which are designated as racially different.
There are two principal standpoints in this matter: one holds that the differences between the racial groups have always existed, — the other sees in all races, no matter how different, only the final members of a long differentiation of the originally uniform human type. We will return to this highly interesting and, for our topic, particularly important controversy. For now, we want to turn to that part of the argumentation of the race problem which underlies the narrower racial question of interest to the European cultural world.
Let us bear in mind that the most significant product of European race theory, the Germanic theory, is built on a triad of points of evidence, with the validity of which the entire theory stands and falls. And just as the debacle of the linguistic school resulted in the fall of the Aryan theory, so too is the proud edifice of the Germanic theory destined for certain collapse

Die naturwissenschaftlichen und histonschen Grundlagen der Rassentheonen. Seit jeher ist es durch die unmittelbare Anschauung evident, daß die Menschen je nach der Hautfarbe und nach anderen weſentlichen Eigentümlichkeiten, nach der Ver- schiedenheit der geistigen und ſeelischen Anlagen in eine Anzahl großer Gruppen zerfallen, die man als raſſe ver- schieden bezeichnet. Es gibt dabei zwei pnnzipielle Standpunkte: der eine hält die Verschiedenheit der Raſſengruppen für ſeit jeher bestehend, — der andere ſieht in allen, noch ſo verschiedenen Raſſen nur die Endglieder einer langen Differenzierung des ursprünglich einheitlichen Menschentypus. Wir werden auf dieſe hochintereſſante und für unſer Thema beſonders wich- tige Streitfrage noch zurückkommen. Jetzt wollen wir uns jenem Teile der Argumentation des Raſſenproblems zu- wenden, welcher der die europäische Kulturwelt intereſ- ſierenden engeren Raſſenfrage zugrunde liegt. Vergegenwärtigen wir uns dabei, daß das bedeutungs- vollste Produkt der europäischen Raſſenlehre, die Ger- manentheone, auf einer TnaS von Beweismomenten aufge- baut ist, mit deren Stichhaltigkeit die ganze Theone steht und fällt. Und ſo wie das Debade der linguistischen Schule den Fall der Anertheone zur Folge hatte, ist auch das stolze Gebäude der Germanentheone dem ſicheren Einsturz ge- 11
