This ridiculous arrogance of the Israelites should surprise us all the less, since they lived in strict isolation from all other peoples and never learned by what great and brilliant deeds, by what virtues these distinguished themselves, to what a magnificent flowering arts and sciences had developed among them and how far they lagged behind these nations.
Even if we accept the revelations of which the Jews boast as direct divine communications, we can still only regard them as national revelations without obligation for other peoples. Their God was a national God, whose love was exclusively for his Jews

Sie allein glaubten das außerwählte Volk Gottes zu ſein . . . . Dieſer lächerliche Hochmuth der Ifraeliten darf uns um ſo weniger befremden, da ſie in strenger Abgeschloſſenheit von allen andem Völkem lebten und niemals erſuhren, durch welche große und glänzende Thaten, durch welche Tugenden dieſe ſich auszeichneten, zu welch’ einer herrlichen Blüthe ſich Künste und Wiſſenschaften bei denſelben entfaltet hatten und wie weit ſie hinter dieſen Nationen zurückstanden.
