Besides, it is characteristic of the three mentioned that they more or less turned away from Judaism and showed some better traits, which seem to confirm the assumption that they were not of purely Jewish blood. What is valuable to be perceived in them might therefore possibly be credited to a few drops of foreign blood.
As is well known, the Jews had so little sympathy for Spinoza's philosophical thought that they tried to do away with the isolated philosopher through excommunication and murder. — In Heine, a conspicuous inner conflict fights. It is as if a piece of the Germanic spirit in him at times wanted to soar to more ideal heights — until suddenly the Jew pulls him down again by the legs into the swamp, where he then wallows with relish and scorns everything ideal.

Außerdem ist bei den genannten Dreien charaktenstisch, daß ſie ſich vom Judenthum mehr oder weniger abwendeten und einige beſſere Züge aufwieſen, die die Vermuthung zu bestätigen scheinen, daß ſie nicht rein jüdischen Geblüts waren. Was Schätzbares an ihnen wahrzunehmen ist, wäre alſo möglicher Weiſe auf Conto einiger Tropfen fremden Blutes zu ſehen. Für den philoſophischen Gedanken Spinoza's hatten die Juden bekanntlich ſo wenig Sympathie, daß ſie den vereinſamten Philoſophen durch Bann und Mord abzuthun verſuchten. — In Heine kämpft ein auffälliger Zwiespalt. Es ist, als ob ein Stück germanischen Geistes in ihm ſich zuweilen zu idealeren Höhen auffchwingen wollte — bis ihn plötzlich der Jude an den Beinen wieder in den Sumpf hemieder zieht, wonn er ſich dann mit Behagen wälzt und alles Ideale verhöhnt. 21) Man ist es doch aber dem Andenken Leſſing's schuldig, daß man eine Anfeindung der Juden nicht billigt. Dieſer Pietäts-Gedanke ist gewöhnlich die letzte Zuflucht derjenigen, die ſachlich gegen die Berechtigung des Antijemitismus nichts mehr vorzubnngen wiſſen.
