than in a monarchical state, and therefore they used the money they had wrested from the princes' subjects with supreme permission, to make the thrones tremble and to intimidate the governments.
They even did so with free cities: In 1612, the Hamburg Senate had permitted the Jews to reside there, but forbade their religious practice. They became rich merchants there and had already built a synagogue by 1626. When the Senate forbade this, they simply threatened to emigrate and it was found necessary to let them quietly continue to carry out their religious customs, and by 1631 there were already three synagogues and a prayer house there.
The revolution that freed the North Americans from the English yoke also freed the Jews; in 1783 they received all civil and political rights there. The French Revolution also freed the Jews there; the beheading of Louis XVI procured civil equality for the "chosen people". Since then, the Jews have worked unceasingly to overthrow all existing legal barriers. The Revolution of 1848 owes its origin primarily to Jewish gold and Jewish incitements. Selbst mit freien Städten machten ſie es ſo: Der Hamburger Senat hatte 1612 den Juden den Aufenthalt gestattet, aber ihre Religionsübung verboten. Sie wurden dort reiche Kaufleute und bauten ſich schon 1626 eine Synagoge. Als ihnen der Senat dies verbot, drohten ſie einfach mit Auswanderung und man ſah ſich genöthigt, ſie ruhig weiter ihre religiöſen Gebräuche ausführen zu laſſen, und 1631 gab es bereits dort drei Synagogen und ein Bethaus. Die Revolution, welche die Nord-Amenkaner vom englischen Joche befreite, machte auch die Juden frei; ſie erhielten dort 1783 alle bürgerlichen und politischen Rechte. Auch die franzöſische Revolution machte die dortigen Juden frei; die Enthauptung Ludwig's XVI. verschaffte dem „auserwählten Volke“ die bürgerliche Gleichberechtigung. Seitdem haben die Juden unaufhörlich an dem Umsturz aller bestehenden geſetzlichen Schranken gearbeitet. Die Revolution von 1848 verdanft ihre Entstehung dem jüdischen Golde und den jüdischen Aufreizungen in erster Linie.
